Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes will play back-to-back road games for the final time during the 2013-2014 season this week as the Gray Wolves head to Michigan for a pair of contests. On Wednesday night Lourdes will face Siena Heights for the first time this year before heading to Marygrove on Saturday afternoon for a date with the Mustangs.
Head Coach Karen McConnell: In her first season both on the Lourdes bench
Karen McConnell has a 5-18 (.217) record. Overall as a women's collegiate head coach, McConnell has a 285-265 (.518) record in her 21st season. She is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Siena Heights holds a 4-0 advantage all-time in the series against Lourdes dating back to Dec. 3, 2011 after winning both contests last season. The Saints are 2-0 against the Gray Wolves in Adrian, Mich. Lourdes holds a 3-1 edge in the series with Marygrove dating back to Nov. 2, 2011. The Gray Wolves won the first meeting this season at Tam-o-Shanter The two schools have split the two previous meetings at Marygrove, with the Mustangs winning in 2011 and Lourdes winning 63-57 last year.
Earlier This Season: Lourdes raced out to a 19-point halftime lead, holding Marygrove to just 13 first half points, and defeated the Mustangs 66-37 on Jan. 4 at Tam-o-Shanter.
Tiffany Scott scored 16 points and
Lauren Tilden added 15 more for the Gray Wolves.
Tiffani Blackman grabbed 10 rebounds as Lourdes outrebounded Marygrove 50-33. Adrienne Weaver led the Mustangs with 13 points as Marygrove shot just 25% from the floor on the afternoon.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Tiffani Blackman scored 18 points but Lourdes shot just 30.6% from the field on Wednesday evening, falling at Concordia (Mich.) 68-59.
Tarynn Hampton grabbed 15 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end as the Gray Wolves finished the game with 21 offensive boards, but Lourdes managed just 14 second chance points. On Saturday afternoon,
Tiffany Scott scored a season-high 22 points, but was the only Gray Wolf in double figures as Indiana Tech posted a 68-54 win over Lourdes. The Gray Wolves were just 3-of-19 (15.8%) from three-point range in the loss.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have won three straight games and 13 of their last 14 games overall following a 74-38 victory at Lawrence Tech on Saturday. Sierra Calhoun leads Siena Heights in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game while Grace Howrigon adds 11.8 points per night. Howrigon also has handed out 6.17 assists per game, ranking third in the nation. The Saints are holding teams to just 34.2% shooting this year, fifth best in the nation.
Scouting Marygrove: The Mustangs enter the week still looking for their first WHAC victory after losing 20 games, most recently 85-52 against Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday. Marygrove heads to Indiana Tech on Wednesday before hosting Lourdes Saturday. Ciara Moore leads the Mustangs in scoring, averaging 12.0 points per game. She is the only player tallying double figures. Marygrove ranks ninth nationally in offensive rebounding, grabbing 15.8 boards per contest on the offensive end of the floor.
Schedule Change: Lourdes regular season finale against Aquinas has been moved to Owens Community College in Perrysburg due to a scheduling conflict at Tam-o-Shanter. The game will also tip off one hour earlier than originally schedule, with the ball now being tossed into the air at noon.
Tilden Earns Academic All-District Accolades: Lauren Tilden was named a First Team Academic All-District I selection for the second straight year as selected by CoSIDA. She was one of just five student-athletes total in the 22-state district to earn the honor. An early childhood education major, she carries a 3.89 cumulative GPA.
Scott Has Career Night: Tiffany Scott scored a career-high 22 points on Saturday afternoon in Lourdes loss to Indiana Tech. The senior made 10 field goals on the afternoon to better her previous best of 21 points scored on Jan. 22 against Madonna.
Durr Grabs Lots of Boards: Jessica Durr recorded her first double-figure rebounding game since her freshman year on Saturday, pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds. She grabbed 10 rebounds against both Aquinas (Nov. 30, 2011) and Siena Heights (Jan. 25, 2012) during her rookie year. Durr more than doubled her season-high high, as the junior's previous best this season was five rebounds.
Crashing the Glass: Tarynn Hampton ranks second in all of NAIA Division II averaging 4.8 offensive rebounds per game. Hampton ranks 11th overall in total rebounding, averaging 10.3 rebounds per night. As a team Lourdes ranks eighth in the nation pulling down 15.9 offensive rebounds per contest, and its +3.1 rebounding margin is 38th best in the country.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2013-2014 are
Tiffani Blackman and
Tiffany Scott. Blackman is a two-time team captain while Scott is in her first season as a team captain.
This and That: Tiffani Blackman and
Lauren Tilden have each scored the exact same number of points (237) this season, six more than
Tiffany Scott ... the Gray Wolves have four players averaging double-figures in scoring ... Siena Heights is the fifth ranked opponent Lourdes has faced this year (0-4) ... Scott's six steals against Indiana Tech were the most by a Gray Wolf this season.
