Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Having won two of its last three games, Lourdes takes to the road on Wednesday evening before returning home on Saturday for a pair of key WHAC games. The Gray Wolves will travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. on Wednesday to battle Aquinas before entertaining Indiana Tech at Tam-o-Shanter on Saturday afternoon to begin a three-game homestand.
Head Coach Andre Smith: In his fifth season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach,
Andre Smith has a 79-68 (.537) record. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history. Smith was the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 6-1 advantage all-time against Aquinas in a series dating back to Nov. 30, 2011 and the Gray Wolves have won the last six meetings between the two schools. Lourdes registered a 68-65 victory over the Saints earlier this season. Lourdes is 2-1 all-time against Aquinas in Grand Rapids, Mich. Indiana Tech holds a 5-4 series edge against Indiana Tech dating back to Oct. 30, 2010, the inaugural game in the Gray Wolf program history. The Warriors posted a 74-64 win over Lourdes in Fort Wayne earlier this season. Indiana Tech holds a 2-1 series advantage in games played at Tam-o-Shanter.
Wrapping Up Last Week: On Wednesday evening Lourdes fell behind #5 Davenport 17-2 and finished the game shooting just 26.4% from the floor as the Gray Wolves fell to the Panthers 79-41.Â
Jake DuPree led Lourdes with 26 points in the loss. On Saturday, Lourdes rallied from a four-point halftime deficit by scoring the first nine points of the second half and defeated Madonna at home 58-53.Â
Zach Steinmetz led the Gray Wolves with 17 points while
E.J. Blackwell added 15 more.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints have won six of their last seven games following a 72-62 victory at Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon. Anthony Williams, the lone Aquinas player to average double figures, leads the team scoring 15.1 points per game. He ranks 11th in NAIA Division II averaging 87.3% from the free throw line. As a team Aquinas is 14th in the nation allowing just 64.8 points per contest.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors have dropped three of their last four games after a 72-62 loss at home to Aquinas on Saturday. Indiana Tech hosts Marygrove on Wednesday before traveling to Lourdes. Franklin Lindsey leads three Warriors averaging in double figures, scoring 12.1 points per game. He is also grabbing a team-leading 8.7 rebounds per night. Chester McFadden (11.9 ppg) and Tanner Watkins (10.0 ppg) both are tallying double figures as well.
Jockeying for Positioning: Lourdes will be playing a pair of teams that the Gray Wolves are battling with for positioning in the WHAC standings. The Gray Wolves enter the week one game behind Aquinas for fifth place in the league ledger. Lourdes, currently in sixth place, will then entertain seventh place Indiana Tech in Saturday's matinee.
DuPree Has Career Night: Jake DuPree tallied a career high with 26 points in the Gray Wolves loss at #5 Davenport last Wednesday. The senior's previous career high was 23 points last season against Point Park. DuPree was 10-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-7 from three-point range on his way to tallying 63.4% of his team's points on the night.
Four in Double Figures: Lourdes had four players tally double figures on Saturday afternoon, accounting for all but two of the Gray Wolves' points on the afternoon.Â
Zach Steinmetz led the way with 17 points while
E.J. Blackwell added 15 more.Â
Jake DuPree chipped in 14 points while
Julian Johnson came off of the bench to score 10 points.Â
Otis Kemutambah was the only other player to score for Lourdes, notching two points.
Doing the Little Things: Brillon Pritchett may not have shown up in the scoring column on Saturday, but the Lourdes senior contributed in other ways. He handed out a season-high seven assists while grabbing eight rebounds, second most on the team for the afternoon.
Another Double-Double: Zach Steinmetz collected his eighth double-double of the season, and 24th of his career, on Saturday. The junior forward tallied team highs with 17 points and 11 rebounds. For the season he is scoring a team-leading 17.1 points per game and grabbing 8.5 rebounds per night.
Among the Nation's Top Defenses: Lourdes has given up just 58.7 points per game this season, a mark that ranks third in NAIA Division II. The Gray Wolves finished in the top-five nationally in scoring defense each of the last three seasons as well. Lourdes has also limited the opposition to just 40.4% shooting from the floor this season, the 16th best mark in the country. Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2014-2015 are
Jake DuPree and
Zach Steinmetz. DuPree is a two-time team captain while Steinmetz is serving as a captain for the first time.
