Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes begins a stretch in which it will play four of its next five matches away from home, beginning with a pair of contests this week. The Gray Wolves play a pair of games on the road this week, beginning with a visit to Concordia (Mich.) on Wednesday followed by a trip to Aquinas on Saturday.  Â
Head Coach Karen McConnell: In her second season on the Lourdes bench
Karen McConnell has a 16-48 (.250) record. Overall as a women's collegiate head coach, McConnell has a 296-295 (.501) record in her 22nd season. She is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 1-7 all-time against Concordia (Mich.) in a series dating back to Oct. 27, 2011 after the two schools split a pair of meetings last year. The Gray Wolves were 79-60 victors at home before falling to the Cardinals 74-56 in Ann Arbor. Concordia holds a 4-0 all-time advantage in the series in Ann Arbor. Aquinas is 8-0 all-time against Lourdes, with the series dating back to Nov. 30, 2011. The Saints were 69-67 victors at Tam-o-Shanter one year ago and posted a 56-48 win in Grand Rapids. Aquinas is 4-0 in the series in games played in Grand Rapids.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes trailed by 18 points with less than five minutes remaining on Wednesday, rallied to take the lead, before falling 55-54 to Mount Vernon Nazarene at home.Â
Jesse Fidler led the Gray Wolves with 13 points, six rebounds, and seven steals, while
Sara Pribonic and
Lindsey Motycka added 12 points each. The Gray Wolves opened WHAC play on Saturday dropping a 56-37 decision to Cornerstone at home. Fidler tallied 19 points while
Niki Meyer added nine points in the loss. Â
Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals have dropped two of their last three games following a 57-42 setback to open WHAC play on Saturday. Kari Borowiak leads Concordia averaging 11.8 points per game while Brianna Rowe has added 10 points per night. Karlee Morris leads the team pulling down 11.8 rebounds per night.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints opened the season with five straight losses before defeating Great Lakes Christian for the first victory of the year. Aquinas fell on Saturday 64-63 at Northwestern Ohio on Saturday to open WHAC play. Aquinas hosts Lawrence Tech on Wednesday before entertaining Lourdes. Katie Theut leads the Saints averaging 9.6 points per game while Tyra Williams is adding 8.4 points and a team-leading 5.9 rebounds per night.
Playing Solid Defense: Lourdes has limited its opponents to just 47.8 points per game this season through the first five games this year. Gray Wolf opponents have yet to score more than 56 points in a game. Last season, only one opposing team scored fewer than 56 points against Lourdes in a game the entire campaign.
Quite a Thief: Jesse Fidler registered a career-high seven steals last Wednesday evening against Mount Vernon Nazarene. Earlier this season, the sophomore has six thefts against Cincinnati Christian. Last year during her rookie campaign Fidler had a season-high four steals on three different occasions.
Pribonic Tallies Career High: Sara Pribonic tallied a career-high 12 points in the comeback effort against Mount Vernon Nazarene. The sophomore's previous career best was 11 points last season against at Concordia (Mich.).
Bench Production Equals Success: Lourdes has had solid production off of the bench in the two victories, getting 20 and 44 points from the reserves in the contests. However, in the three setbacks, the Gray Wolves have received just 14, 14, and seven points from the bench. Â
Thompson Distributes the Rock: Molea Thompson has led the Gray Wolves with 10 assists thus far this season. She has committed just six turnovers, and leads the team with a 1.7 assist-to-turnover ratio. Â
School Record Effort: The 20 points allowed by the Gray Wolves against Akron Wayne on Nov. 7 set a new school record for fewest points allowed in a contest. Lourdes previous best effort was 37 on Jan. 4, 2014 against Marygrove. Lourdes held the Warriors to just 9.1% (5-for-55) shooting on the afternoon Saturday, including a 2-for-10 effort from three-point range.
Lourdes Tabbed 10th in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Michigan-Dearborn, and just behind Concordia (Mich.). Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2015-2016 after winning the conference title nine straight seasons.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two sophomore captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2015-2016 are
Jesse Fidler and
Niki Meyer. The duo both had successful freshmen campaigns with the Gray Wolves.
