Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes returns home to Tam-o-Shanter on Tuesday evening, looking to snap a three-game losing skid while closing out the month of November. The Gray Wolves entertain Michigan-Dearborn in search of their first WHAC victory of the season. Â
On the Air: Tuesday's game against Michigan-Dearborn will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on BCSN on Buckeye Cablesystem. The game will air on BCSN on Wednesday at 1:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. as well as on Saturday at 5 p.m. In addition, BCSN2 will show the game on Wednesday morning at 5 a.m. as well as Friday at 5 a.m. and midnight.
Head Coach Andre Smith: In his sixth season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach,
Andre Smith has a 87-76 (.534) record. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history. Smith was the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 5-3 all-time advantage against Michigan-Dearborn in a series that dates back to Jan. 14, 2012. Last season the two schools split a pair of meetings, with each defending its own home floor. The Gray Wolves scored a 67-48 win at Tam-o-Shanter on Nov. 15, 2014 before the Wolverines registered a 59-54 triumph in Dearborn, Mich. on Feb. 7, 2015. Lourdes is 4-0 all-time against Michigan-Dearborn at home.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes never led on Wednesday evening and Concordia (Mich.) connected on 11 three-pointers as the Cardinals downed the Gray Wolves 71-61 in Ann Arbor, Mich.Â
Zach Steinmetz scored 22 points and pulled down eight rebounds while
E.J. Blackwell added 16 points for the Gray Wolves. On Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich., Aquinas made three free throws in the final seconds to force overtime before eventually defeating the Gray Wolves 55-52. Blackwell led Lourdes with 19 points while Steinmetz added 18 points and nine boards in the loss.
Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines enter the week having dropped back-to-back games to #3 Davenport and Indiana Tech last week. Michigan-Dearborn is playing an exhibition game on Monday at NCAA Division I Detroit before heading to Lourdes. Marcus Williams leads Michigan-Dearborn averaging 25.5 points per game while Xavier Crofford adds 17.6 points per night. Jason Penn is also averaging in double figures for the Wolverines, tallying 12.3 points per contest.
Bonus Basketball Not Kind to Gray Wolves: After not playing overtime during the entire 2014-2015 season, Lourdes fell in the extra session at Aquinas on Saturday 55-52. All-time the Gray Wolves are just 1-4 when pushed beyond 40 minutes, with the lone win coming Dec. 11, 2013 against Point Park.
In the Heart of WHAC Play: While most conferences in college basketball don't start league play until December, or even January, Lourdes is in the midst of six WHAC contests in a row during November and December. The Gray Wolves are still looking for their first conference victory. Lourdes has not entered the month of December winless in WHAC play since 2011-2012.
Blackwell Tallies Double Figures: E.J. Blackwell has tallied double figures in the scoring column in all six games he has played thus far this season. In fact, the senior has yet to score fewer than 16 points in any contest, and enters the week averaging a team-leading 18.3 points per night. Blackwell scored a season-high 23 points against Akron Wayne on Nov. 7. He is shooting 48.1% from the floor, including 4-for-10 (40%) from three-point range, and is a 76.9% free throw shooter.
Cleaning the Glass: Zach Steinmetz has grabbed at least seven rebounds in every game this season for the Gray Wolves. The senior is averaging 9.0 boards per night, and grabbed a season-best 12 caroms against Silver Lake (Wis.) on Oct. 31. Steinmetz ranks 31 in all of NAIA Division II with is 9.0 rebounding average.
Swanigan Off to Solid Start: Anthony Swanigan has been a key factor for the Gray Wolves through his first six games in a Lourdes uniform. The junior is scoring 12.8 points per game for the Gray Wolves while shooting 50% from the floor. Swanigan has added 4.8 rebounds per night while tallying a team-leading nine steals.
Quite the Ratio: Julian Johnson has handed out 22 assists already this season while committing just six turnovers for the Gray Wolves. Last week in two games he had 10 helpers and just two miscues.
Hot Shooting: Lourdes ranks fifth in NAIA Division II shooting 45.3% from three-point range as a team this season.
Limiting Scoring Yet Again: The Gray Wolves enter play on Tuesday ranked seventh in NAIA Division II allowing just 62.5 points per game this season after finishing in the top-five nationally in scoring defense each of the last four seasons. Lourdes finished third in NAIA Division II last season surrendering just 58.7 points per game. In 2013-2014 Lourdes was fifth (63.10), one year after leading the country in 2012-2013 allowing just 51.3 points per night. Â
Lourdes Tabbed Fourth in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in fourth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Aquinas, and just behind Northwestern Ohio. Cornerstone was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite after winning the 2014-2015 NAIA Division II national championship. Davenport, a national semifinalist a year ago, was tabbed second.
This and That: Alonzo Hamilton made his first two collegiate starts last week for the Gray Wolves ... Lourdes ranks 25th in NAIA Division II shooting 73.1% from the free throw line as a team.
