Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes heads into the month of December playing a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference games this week. The Gray Wolves travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. on Wednesday to battle Indiana Tech before entertaining first place Lawrence Tech in a Saturday matinee.
On the Air: Saturday's game against Lawrence Tech will be broadcast live on BCSN on Buckeye Cablesystem. The game will also be replayed on BCSN on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. In addition, BCSN2 will show the game on Sunday at 4:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Head Coach Karen McConnell: In her second season on the Lourdes bench
Karen McConnell has a 17-51 (.250) record. Overall as a women's collegiate head coach, McConnell has a 297-298 (.499) record in her 22nd season. She is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 1-7 all-time against Indiana Tech in a series dating back to Jan. 7, 2012 after the Warriors swept last year's meetings to extend their winning streak in the series to four. Indiana Tech posted a 67-59 victory in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Dec. 6, 2014 before winning 61-52 at Tam-o-Shanter on Jan. 24, 2015. Indiana Tech holds a 3-1 advantage in games played in Fort Wayne. Lourdes and Lawrence Tech are 3-3 all-time against each other dating back to Nov. 17, 2012 after splitting a pair of games last year. The Blue Devils won 84-65 in Southfield, Mich. on Nov. 22, 2014 before the Gray Wolves scored a 74-70 victory at Tam-o-Shanter on Jan. 31, 2015. Lourdes holds a 2-1 series edge at home.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes turned 23 Michigan-Dearborn turnovers into 27 points on Tuesday evening and defeated the Wolverines at Tam-o-Shanter 60-45 for the Gray Wolves' first WHAC victory of the season.Â
Jesse Fidler led Lourdes with 20 points and eight rebounds while
Lindsey Motycka added 11 points and eight boards. On Friday night Ohio Valley shot 55.6% from the floor and defeated Lourdes 78-67 in Vienna, W. Va.Â
Andrea Hodge scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Gray Wolves while Fidler added 14 points.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors enter the contest having won three straight games following a 72-42 victory at Wilberforce on Saturday afternoon. Taylor Seiss leads Indiana Tech averaging 14.8 points per game while Taylor Carver adds 12.3 points per night while shooting 55.4% from the floor. Haley Cook is also tallying double figures, scoring 11.9 points per game. The Warriors have nine players averaging double figure minutes on the year.
Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils enter the week still undefeated after defeating Cornerstone 67-57 last Tuesday evening. Lawrence Tech hosts Marygrove on Wednesday before heading to Lourdes on Saturday. Allison Kitchen leads the Blue Devils in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game this season. Kitchen is shooting 68.9% from the floor on the year. Hali Butler adds 12.0 points per night for a Lawrence Tech squad that is outscoring the opposition by 11.0 points per contest.
Fidler Continues to Lead the Offense: Jesse Fidler is tallying a team-leading 13.9 points per game and has posted double figures in eight of her nine games this year. Fidler scored a season-high 20 points against Michigan-Dearborn last Tuesday, and has seven straight double figure scoring games. Offensively Fidler is shooting 56.7% from the floor, ranking 14th in NAIA Division II.
Meyer Joins the Double Figure Club: After scoring 13 points on Friday against Ohio Valley,
Niki Meyer has increased her scoring average to 10.0 points per contest. The sophomore tallied a season-high 17 points earlier this season at Aquinas, and leads the Gray Wolves with 14 three-point field goals on the year. Meyer is also the team's leader from the free throw line, connecting on 87.5% of her attempts from the charity stripe.
Among the Nation's Defensive Leaders: Lourdes has limited its opponents to just 55.0 points per game this season, a mark that ranks 10th in NAIA Division II. The Gray Wolves are limiting the opposition to just 34.6% shooting from the floor, the 22nd best field goal percentage defense in the country. Lourdes also ranks in the top-40 nationally as a team averaging 10.22 steals per contest.
Among the National Leaders Individually: Jesse Fidler ranks seventh in NAIA individually with 28 steals on the season and her 3.11 thefts per night rank 18th in NAIA Division II. She has four or more steals in five of her nine games this season, including a career-high seven thefts against Mount Vernon Nazarene.Â
Niki Meyer is 35th individually with nine blocked shots while
Constance Conner ranks 46th in the country with a 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Lourdes Tabbed 10th in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Michigan-Dearborn, and just behind Concordia (Mich.). Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2015-2016 after winning the conference title nine straight seasons.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two sophomore captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2015-2016 are
Jesse Fidler and
Niki Meyer. The duo both had successful freshmen campaigns with the Gray Wolves.
