Scouting Carlow: The Celtics are opening their 2015-2016 season against Lourdes after finishing the 2014-2015 campaign with an 11-14 record overall and a 2-12 mark in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Carlow returns six players that saw action one season ago. Lynzi Mueller is the team's top returning scorer and rebounder after tallying 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game last year. Sami Simpson added 9.2 points per contest while shooting a team-high 51.7% from the floor.
Scouting Akron Wayne: The Warriors are opening the 2015-2016 season against Lourdes on Saturday.
Career Day in the Opener: Jesse Fidler scored a career-high 18 points for the Gray Wolves in the season opener against Cincinnati Christian while also tallying a career-best six steals. The sophomore's previous highs last season were 16 points against Marygrove and four steals on several occasions.
More Career Numbers: Niki Meyer matched her career high scoring output as well against the Eagles. The sophomore poured in 14 points, matching her previous best against Aquinas last year. Â
Quite a Debut: Andrea Hodge made quite a collegiate debut for the Gray Wolves. The freshman scored 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and added six rebounds in 28 minutes while drawing a starting assignment.
Taking Care of the Basketball: Lourdes committed just 10 turnovers in the season opener against Cincinnati Christian, one more than the Gray Wolves' season low all of last year. Lourdes turned the ball over just nine times against Siena Heights, but had 11 or more miscues in every other contest.
Back-to-Back Season Opening Wins: Lourdes won its season opener for the second straight season with the win over Cincinnati Christian, marking the first time in program history the Gray Wolves have won back-to-back openers. Last season Lourdes notched an 87-77 victory at home against Rochester (Mich.) to begin the season. Â
New Faces in the Starting Lineup: The Lourdes starting lineup for the season opener had four players in it that were making their first collegiate start.Â
Niki Meyer and
Sara Pribonic came off of the bench in every appearance they made last season while
Lindsey Motycka and
Andrea Hodge were making their collegiate debuts. Only
Jesse Fidler had previous starting experience.
Winning Quarters: With the women's game moving to four quarters from two halves this season, Lourdes seemed to have little trouble adjusting in the opener. The Gray Wolves won three of the four quarters against Cincinnati Christian, only falling by two points in the second period after leading by 14 after one.
Lourdes Tabbed 10th in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Michigan-Dearborn, and just behind Concordia (Mich.). Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2015-2016 after winning the conference title nine straight seasons.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two sophomore captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2015-2016 are
Jesse Fidler and
Niki Meyer. The duo both had successful freshmen campaigns with the Gray Wolves.
This and That: The Gray Wolves outscored Cincinnati Christian 40-16 in the paint in the opener ...
Jesse Fidler, the team's active scoring leader, enters the week nine points shy of 300 for her career ... Lourdes has yet to trail this season.
