Women's Basketball Returns Home for Two Games This Week

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: After two games on the road last week, Lourdes returns home to Tam-o-Shanter for a pair of contests this week.  The Gray Wolves will entertain Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday evening before opening Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday against Cornerstone.    

Head Coach Karen McConnell: In her second season on the Lourdes bench Karen McConnell has a 16-46 (.258) record.  Overall as a women's collegiate head coach, McConnell has a 296-293 (.503) record in her 22nd season.  She is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Lourdes has never met Mount Vernon Nazarene in women's basketball.  The Gray Wolves are 0-8 all-time against Cornerstone in a series that dates back to Dec. 10, 2011.  Last year the Golden Eagles defeated Lourdes 66-40 in Grand Rapids, Mich. and scored a 56-49 triumph over the Gray Wolves at Tam-o-Shanter.  Cornerstone is 3-0 all-time against Lourdes in games played at Tam-o-Shanter.

Wrapping Up Last Week: A three-pointer with under 30 seconds remaining on Friday night gave Carlow the lead, and the Celtics would not relinquish the advantage the rest of the way, defeating Lourdes 53-47 in Pittsburgh, Pa.  Jesse Fidler led Lourdes with 12 points, but the Gray Wolves were unable to overcome 26 turnovers.  On Saturday Lourdes jumped out to a 37-4  lead at halftime and defeated Akron Wayne on the road 68-20.  Niki Meyer and Mariah DuPree led the Gray Wolves with 11 points each in the victory.  

Scouting Mount Vernon Nazarene: The Cougars improved to 3-0 on Saturday afternoon with a 90-58 victory over Emmaus Bible College in Chicago, Ill.  Megan Beidelman is averaging a double-double for Mount Vernon Nazarene, tallying a team-leading 17.7 points and 13.7 rebounds per game thus far this year.  Sierra Basista is shooting 55.6% from the floor and is scoring 14.7 points and handing out 4.7 assists per contest while Natalie Carpenter is tallying 13.0 points per game for the Cougars.

Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles dropped back-to-back games last weekend, falling to #18 Robert Morris (Ill.) 64-51 and #11 Purdue Calumet 81-62.  Cornerstone hosts Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday before heading to Lourdes.  Jill Steenwyk leads the Golden Eagles in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.  Jesse Sheridan adds 12.7 points per night while Ellery Mast is tallying 10.0 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds per game.

WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 1-3 all-time in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference openers.  The Gray Wolves defeated Lawrence Tech in the first conference game of the 2012-2013 season.  Lourdes fell to Concordia (Mich.) in its first league opener in 2011-2012 and to Lawrence Tech at home in 2013-2014.  Last year the Gray Wolves dropped their conference debut to Michigan-Dearborn at home 64-54.

Sharing the Minutes: In Lourdes victory over Akron Wayne on Saturday, not one Gray Wolf saw more than 19 minutes of action on the floor.  All 14 players that dressed for the Gray Wolves played at least nine minutes on the afternoon, with 13 of the 14 players scoring at least two points.

School Record Effort: The 20 points allowed by the Gray Wolves against Akron Wayne set a new school record for fewest points allowed in a contest.  Lourdes previous best effort was 37 on Jan. 4, 2014 against Marygrove.  Lourdes held the Warriors to just 9.1% (5-for-55) shooting on the afternoon Saturday, including a 2-for-10 effort from three-point range.

DuPree with Quite the Night: Mariah DuPree entered Saturday's contest having scored a total of seven points in her first two seasons with the Gray Wolves.  On Saturday she mad four of her seven shots from the floor on the way to a career-high 11 points, sharing the team's scoring lead for the afternoon.  

Winning the Board Battle: Lourdes has outrebounded all three opponents thus far this season by an average of 11.0 boards Lindsey Motycka leads the Gray Wolves averaging 7.7 boards per game, having tallied a season high nine in the opener against Cincinnati Christian.  

Controlling the Paint: Lourdes is outscoring teams 96-48 through three games this season.  

Lourdes Tabbed 10th in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  Lourdes was picked just ahead of Michigan-Dearborn, and just behind Concordia (Mich.).  Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2015-2016 after winning the conference title nine straight seasons.

Captains Named: Lourdes has two sophomore captains on the roster this season.  Serving in the leadership role for 2015-2016 are Jesse Fidler and Niki Meyer.  The duo both had successful freshmen campaigns with the Gray Wolves.

This and That: Samantha Enck and Charee Jones each scored their first collegiate points against Akron Wayne ... Akron Wayne played with just four players on the court for more than six minutes on Saturday ... Kaitlyn Kavanaugh made her first career start against Akron Wayne.
