Lourdes Heads to Indiana-Northwest for Final Game Before Holidays

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes plays its final regular season game of the 2015 calendar year on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves head to Gary, Ind. to face Indiana-Northwest.  Lourdes is looking to snap a three-game losing streak, which matches its longest of the season.

Head Coach Andre Smith: In his sixth season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Andre Smith has a 90-80 (.529) record.  He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.  Smith was the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.

Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 1-0 series advantage against Indiana-Northwest, having won the only previous meeting between the two schools on Nov. 9, 2012.  The Gray Wolves were 59-51 victors over the RedHawks in Gary, Ind.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes led by eight at halftime on Tuesday against Spring Arbor, but the Cougars shot 65.6% from the floor in the second half and rallied to defeat the Gray Wolves 87-68.  Zach Steinmetz led Lourdes with 25 points and seven rebounds while Anthony Swanigan added 18 points.  Lourdes hung close with fourth-ranked Marian on Saturday afternoon before falling on the road 76-69.  Steinmetz led four Gray Wolves in double figures with 17 points while Swanigan added 15 points and eight boards.

Scouting Indiana-Northwest: The RedHawks have dropped two straight games following a 76-73 setback at Indiana-Kokomo on Saturday afternoon.  Darrius Davis leads Indiana-Northwest averaging 13.0 points per game while John Mosser adds 11.8 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds per night.  J.J. Pennington and Brandon Grubl each are tallying double figures as well, scoring 10.6 points and 10.2 points per game respectively.

Rough Schedule: Lourdes has already faced three top-five ranked teams this season.  The Gray Wolves hosted number one Cornerstone to open WHAC play, falling to the Golden Eagles 63-54.  The Gray Wolves dropped a 70-64 decision to third-ranked Davenport on the road, and dropped a 76-69 contest last Saturday at number four Marian.

A Tale of Two Halves: Lourdes was solid shooting the basketball in the first half of both games last week, but struggled from the floor over the final 20 minutes.  The Gray Wolves connected at a 64% clip in the first half at Spring Arbor, only to shoot just 25.7% over the second stanza as the Cougars rallied.  Lourdes shot 53.6% in the first half at Marian before shooting just 38.7% over the final 20 minutes.

70 is the Magic Number: Lourdes is undefeated when scoring 70 points in a game this season.  Meanwhile, when the Gray Wolves have surrendered 70 points in a contest, they have yet to win, posting an 0-5 record.

Defending the Arc: Lourdes allowed 27 points in each of the last two games from three-point range.  Both Spring Arbor and Marian made 9-of-18 shots from long range.  The Gray Wolves are surrendering 8.2 triples per contest this season, and have allowed 10 or more in a game three times this year.

Who's in the Lineup Today?: Lourdes has had nine different players start at least one contest thus far this season, with only Anthony Swanigan drawing the starting nod in all 13 games.   

Nearly Even in Scoring: Lourdes has scored 861 points this season while allowing just one fewer through 13 games.  The Gray Wolves have been outscored 397-386 in the opening 20 minutes, but have tallied 467 points in the second stanza.  

Limiting Scoring Yet Again: The Gray Wolves enter the week ranked 10th in NAIA Division II allowing just 66.2 points per game this season after finishing in the top-five nationally in scoring defense each of the last four seasons.  Lourdes finished third in NAIA Division II last season surrendering just 58.7 points per game.  In 2013-2014 Lourdes was fifth (63.10), one year after leading the country in 2012-2013 allowing just 51.3 points per night.

More National Rankings: Lourdes ranks 37th in NAIA Division II shooting 36.8% from three-point range this year.  Defensively, the Gray Wolves are holding the opposition to just 41.9% shooting from the floor, a mark that ranks 39th nationally.

Individually Among the National Leaders: Zach Steinmetz ranks 32nd in the country averaging 8.6 rebounds per contest.  Julian Johnson is 33rd in NAIA Division II with a 3.1 assist-to-turnover ratio while ranking 47 with 50 total assists.

This and That: E.J. Blackwell leads Lourdes in scoring, averaging 17.2 points per game, while Steinmetz adds 15.8 points per contest ... Steinmetz has surpassed 1,100 points for his career, and enters the week with 1,145 ... Steinmetz also surpassed the 700 rebound mark for his career, having pulled down 701 while at Lourdes.
