Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes takes to the road for a pair of key WHAC battles to open the month of February. The Gray Wolves are currently in sixth place in the league standings and travel to fourth place Concordia (Mich.) on Wednesday before battling 10th place Michigan-Dearborn in a Saturday afternoon affair.
Head Coach Andre Smith: In his fifth season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach,
Andre Smith has a 81-70 (.536) record. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history. Smith was the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 6-4 advantage all-time against Concordia (Mich.) in a series dating back to Nov. 10, 2010. The Gray Wolves had their four-game winning streak in the series snapped earlier this season on Jan. 7 as the Cardinals posted a 56-48 victory at Tam-o-Shanter. Lourdes leads the series in Ann Arbor, Mich. 3-2. Lourdes holds a 5-2 series edge against Michigan-Dearborn dating back to Jan. 14, 2012. The Gray Wolves have won four of the last five meetings between the two schools after posting a 67-48 win over the Wolverines at Tam-o-Shanter earlier this season on Nov. 15. Lourdes holds a 3-0 series advantage in games played in Dearborn, Mich.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes led ninth-ranked Cornerstone by seven points at halftime last Wednesday evening at Tam-o-Shanter, but the Golden Eagles took the lead for good with a 9-0 run beginning with six minutes to play and defeated the Gray Wolves 67-55.Â
Jake DuPree led Lourdes with 17 points while
Zach Steinmetz added 15 points. On Saturday afternoon it was the Gray Wolves that finished the game on a 10-2 run, and rallied to defeat Lawrence Tech 54-48 at Tam-o-Shanter. Steinmetz just missed a double-double, finishing the game with 25 points and nine rebounds as the lone Lourdes player to tally double figures.
Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals have won four straight games after capturing the Concordia Invitational title last weekend at home. The Cardinals downed Concordia (Neb.) 52-49 in the title game on Saturday after defeating Concordia (Wis.) in the opening round. Josh Fugate leads Concordia in scoring averaging 15.0 points per game. Andrew Patrick is the only other Cardinal tallying double figures, scoring 13.8 per night. Patrick also ranks 31st nationally handing out 4.5 assists per contest. As a team the Cardinals rank 18th in NAIA Division II allowing just 65.6 points per game.
Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines enter the week having split the first two games of their four-game homestand after defeating Kuyper last Friday night before falling to Siena Heights 66-65 on Saturday. Michigan-Dearborn will host Aquinas on Wednesday before entertaining Lourdes. Jamiel Strickland leads the Wolverines in scoring, tallying 13.3 points per game. He ranks 14th in the nation shooting 47.0% from three-point range. Darryl Mobley Jr. adds 10.7 points per contest. As a team, Michigan-Dearborn ranks eighth in the country blocking 4.17 shots per night.
Looking to Break the String on Wednesday: Over the last four weeks and a total of eight games, Lourdes has alternated wins and losses. The Gray Wolves have suffered setbacks on each Wednesday night while posting victories on Saturday afternoons. Â
Taking Care of the Basketball: Lourdes has committed just 20 total turnovers over the last three games, dating back to a season low five turnovers against Indiana Tech on Jan. 24. The Gray Wolves registered just seven miscues against #9 Cornerstone and eight on Saturday in the win over Lawrence Tech. The Gray Wolves, which are averaging just 12.0 miscues per contest, have now played eight games in which they have committed eight turnovers or less this season.
Offensive Rebounds, Fewer Turnovers Equal More Shots: Lourdes is averaging more than 11 offensive rebounds per game this season, and has pulled down 42 more offensive boards than its opponents. That combined with 46 fewer turnovers than the opposition has led the Gray Wolves to take 91 more shot attempts this season than the opposition. Lourdes has made 92 more shots than their opponents as well. Â
Offensive Output Slowed: Since the calendar turned to 2015, Lourdes offense has been slowed considerably. The Gray Wolves have scored more than 58 points just one time (68 vs. Indiana Tech). Lourdes managed four wins in the nine games though.
Among the Nation's Top Defenses: Lourdes has given up just 58.8 points per game this season, a mark that ranks fourth in NAIA Division II. The Gray Wolves finished in the top-five nationally in scoring defense each of the last three seasons as well. Lourdes has also limited the opposition to just 40.4% shooting from the floor this season, the 12th best mark in the country.
