Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes looks to bounce back from back-to-back losses in the second to last week of the season. The Gray Wolves entertain Marygrove on Wednesday evening at Tam-o-Shanter before traveling north to face Siena Heights on Saturday night.
Head Coach Karen McConnell: In her second season on the Lourdes bench
Karen McConnell has a 13-42 (.236) record. Overall as a women's collegiate head coach, McConnell has a 293-289 (.503) record in her 22nd season. She is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes leads the all-time series with Marygrove 5-1 dating back to Nov. 2, 2011 and has won the last five meetings between the two schools after downing the Mustangs earlier this season 68-56 in Highland Park, Mich. Lourdes holds a 2-1 edge in the series in games played at Tam-o-Shanter. Siena Heights has won all seven previous meetings against the Gray Wolves in a series that dates back to Dec. 3, 2011. The Saints scored an 86-63 win at Tam-o-Shanter back on Jan. 10. Siena Heights holds a 3-0 series edge in Adrian, Mich. The Saints have been ranked in the top-25 in each of the last four meetings between the two teams. Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes fell behind by 13 points in the first half, rallied to take a second half lead, but eventually fell 56-49 at home against Cornerstone on Wednesday night.Â
Jesse Fidler scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Gray Wolves while
Niki Meyer added 10 points. On Saturday afternoon, Lourdes jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead and withstood a Lawrence Tech rally in the second half to defeat the Blue Devils 74-70 at Tam-o-Shanter.Â
Molea Thompson tallied a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds off of the bench while
Lauren Tilden added 17 points. Fidler and
Emily Orsini each tallied 12 points as the Gray Wolves had four players finish in double figures.
Scouting Marygrove: The Mustangs have lost four consecutive games after falling at Siena Heights 89-44 last Saturday evening. Raeha Weaver is the lone Mustang to average double figures on the season, scoring 13.1 points per game. Weaver also leads the team in assists, tallying 2.2 per contest. Micaiah King is averaging 6.8 rebounds per night, the most on the Marygrove roster. As a team Marygrove is shooting 30.8% from the floor and 23.1% from three-point range. The Mustangs rank 26th nationally pulling down 14.58 offensive rebounds per game.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have won five of their last six games overall after posting an 89-44 victory over Marygrove on Saturday night. Siena Heights travels to Cornerstone on Wednesday evening before hosting Lourdes Saturday night. Sierra Calhoun leads Siena Heights in scoring, tallying 16.6 points per game. Mackenzie Tomasik adds 9.6 points per game while Alexxis Knannlein tallies 9.3 points per contest. Tomasik and Knannlein share the team's rebounding lead at 7.2 boards per night. As a team Siena Heights is holding its opponents to just 32.6% shooting from the floor, a mark that ranks fifth nationally, while surrendering just 56.1 points per game, ranking ninth in NAIA Division II.
Back-to-Back Double Figure Efforts: After posting double figures just once in her career prior to last week,
Tara Yurek turned in a pair of 10-point performances against Concordia (Mich.) and Michigan-Dearborn. The fifth-year senior scored a career-high 12 points against Northwestern Ohio earlier this year (Jan. 3), but otherwise had not scored more than six points in a game until Wednesday, and then duplicated the effort on Saturday.
Closing in on 300: Lauren Tilden ranks 10th nationally in three-point shooting, averaging 2.92 triples per contest. She is closing in on 300 for her career. Tilden enters the week having made 74 treys on the season and 292 in her four-year career.
68 is the Magic Number: Lourdes has posted a 7-0 record when scoring 68 or more points this season. On the other hand, the Gray Wolves are 0-19 when failing to reach their magic number.
Pribonic a Late Spark: Sara Pribonic has proven to be a late season scorer for the Gray Wolves. After tallying nine points throughout the first 11 games of her freshman season (through Dec. 3), she has posted a pair of double figure scoring efforts over her last six games. The rookie went 4-for-4 from the floor on her way to a career-high 11 points last Wednesday at Concordia (Mich.).
Defending the Arc: Lourdes is holding teams to just 29.4% shooting from three-point range this season, a mark that ranks 45th best among all NAIA Division II programs. Only once in the last six games has a team made more than four three-point field goals against the Gray Wolves.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2014-2015 are
Lauren Tilden and
Emily Orsini. Tilden is a two-time team captain, having also served in that role in 2012-2013, while Orsini is in her first season as a team captain.
This and That: Lauren Tilden (14.4 ppg),
Jesse Fidler (8.8 ppg), and
