Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes wraps up a three-game road trip this week with a pair of games in the state of Michigan. The Gray Wolves head to Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday evening before traveling to Lawrence Tech for a Saturday matinee.
Head Coach Andre Smith: In his sixth season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach,
Andre Smith has a 92-86 (.517) record. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history. Smith was the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 6-3 all-time advantage against Michigan-Dearborn in a series that dates back to Jan. 14, 2012. The Gray Wolves won the first meeting this season 69-63 at Tam-o-Shanter on Nov. 24. The Wolverines lead the series 3-1 in Dearborn, Mich. Lourdes is 7-1 all-time against Lawrence Tech in a series that dates back to Nov. 3, 2012. The Gray Wolves won the first meeting this year 57-54 at Tam-o-Shanter on Dec. 5. Lourdes holds a 2-1 series edge in Southfield, Mich.
Earlier This Season: Zach Steinmetz registered a double-double and Lourdes rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to defeat Michigan-Dearborn 69-63 on Nov. 24 at Tam-o-Shanter. Steinmetz finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds while
E.J. Blackwell added 20 points. Xavier Crofford led the Wolverines with 17 points. On Dec. 5 Steinmetz and
Anthony Swanigan each had double-doubles and Lourdes held off a late rally by Lawrence Tech to post a 57-54 win. Steinmetz had 11 points and 11 boards while Swanigan finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Blackwell added a team-high 14 points for Lourdes. Jon Harden led Lawrence Tech with 14 points.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes shot just 30.9% from the floor on Wednesday as the Gray Wolves suffered a 55-46 setback at home against Indiana Tech.Â
E.J. Blackwell led the Gray Wolves with 16 points while
Zach Steinmetz tallied 12 points and 13 boards. On Saturday Lourdes shot 51.1% from the field, but #16 Cornerstone connected at a 56% clip and downed the Gray Wolves 74-61. Blackwell led Lourdes with 18 points in the road setback.
Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines have won back-to-back games after posting an 85-75 victory at Marygrove on Saturday afternoon. Marcus Williams leads four players averaging in double figures, tallying 15.6 points per game. Xavier Crofford adds 14.2 points per night while Jason Penn tallies 11.0 points and a team-leading 6.6 rebounds per game. As a team Michigan-Dearborn ranks eighth in NAIA Division II averaging 4.7 blocks per contest.
Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils have dropped four straight games entering this week after falling 71-62 at home against Madonna on Saturday. Lawrence Tech travels to Cornerstone on Wednesday before hosting Lourdes. Jon Harden is the lone Blue Devil averaging in double figures, tallying 10.8 points per game. Jake Mullin and Brad Watterworth each add 9.9 points per night.
Crunch Time in the WHAC: Lourdes enters the week tied for 10th place in the WHAC standings with eight games to play. The Gray Wolves are currently two games behind Siena Heights for the eighth and final tournament qualifying position for the postseason WHAC tournament. This week Lourdes battles seventh place Michigan-Dearborn and a Lawrence Tech squad that is tied with the Gray Wolves in hopes of moving up the league ledger.
Steinmetz Adds Another Double-Double: Zach Steinmetz registered 12 points and 13 rebounds against Indiana Tech last Wednesday, notching his fifth double-double of the season. The senior now has 31 double-doubles in his three-year career with the Gray Wolves.
Going The Distance: E.J. Blackwell did not leave the court for Lourdes last week, playing all 40 minutes in both contests. He led the Gray Wolves in scoring in both games, tallying 16 points against Indiana Tech and 18 points at Cornerstone. The senior has played the entire game six times this season.
Among the WHAC's Best: Julian Johnson leads the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference averaging 3.95 assists per contest.Â
Zach Steinmetz is second in the league in rebounding, pulling down 8.65 boards per night.
Limiting Scoring Yet Again: The Gray Wolves enter the week ranked sixth in NAIA Division II allowing 66.1 points per game this season after finishing in the top-five nationally in scoring defense each of the last four seasons. Lourdes finished third in NAIA Division II last season surrendering just 58.7 points per game. In 2013-2014 Lourdes was fifth (63.10), one year after leading the country in 2012-2013 allowing just 51.3 points per night.
More National Rankings: Lourdes has improved to 7.3% from the free throw line this season, and now ranks 21st in all of NAIA Division II. In addition, the Gray Wolves are holding teams to 42.4% shooting from the floor, a mark that is 38th nationally.
Individually Among the National Leaders: Zach Steinmetz ranks 28th in the country averaging 8.65 rebounds per contest.Â
Julian Johnson ranks 34th in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.59 while
E.J. Blackwell is 39th in the country shooting 81.3% from the free throw line.
This and That: Lourdes' five-game losing skid matches its longest in program history (Dec. 21, 2014-Jan. 7, 2015) ... the Gray Wolves have not led in a game since Jan. 13 against Marygrove ... Lourdes has yet to win a game when surrendering 70 points or more.
