Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: A three-game Michigan road trip comes to a close this week for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves play two more games away from home. On Wednesday, Lourdes travels to Michigan-Dearborn before heading to nationally-ranked Lawrence Tech for a Saturday matinee.
Head Coach Karen McConnell: In her second season on the Lourdes bench
Karen McConnell has a 19-61 (.238) record. Overall as a women's collegiate head coach, McConnell has a 299-308 (.493) record in her 22nd season. She is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Michigan-Dearborn holds a 5-4 all-time series advantage against Lourdes dating back to Jan. 14, 2012, but the Gray Wolves won the meeting earlier this season at Tam-o-Shanter 60-45 on Nov. 24. The Wolverines hold a 3-1 series edge in games played in Dearborn, Mich. Lawrence Tech is 4-3 all-time against Lourdes dating back to Nov. 17, 2012. The Blue Devils have won two straight in the series and defeated the Gray Wolves 83-60 on Dec. 5 at Tam-o-Shanter. Lawrence Tech is 2-1 in the series in Southfield, Mich.
Earlier This Season: Lourdes pulled away in the second half on Nov. 24 to score a 60-45 victory over Michigan-Dearborn at Tam-o-Shanter despite shooting just 34.4% from the floor.Â
Jesse Fidler led Lourdes with 20 points while Ashley Sandelin tallied 11 for the Wolverines. On Dec. 5, Lawrence Tech built an 18-point halftime lead on the way to an 83-60 win at Tam-o-Shanter. Fidler scored 15 points to pace the Gray Wolves while Allison Kitchen scored 18 points to lead the Blue Devils.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Indiana Tech jumped on top by 14 points after the opening quarter and Lourdes was never able to rally on Wednesday, falling 82-65 to the Warriors at Tam-o-Shanter.Â
Molea Thompson led the Gray Wolves with 16 points while
Andrea Hodge added 13. On Saturday, Lourdes trailed Cornerstone by just one at halftime, but the Golden Eagles pulled away in the third quarter to notch a 69-49 victory in Grand Rapids, Mich. Hodge led Lourdes with 13 points in the setback while
Jesse Fidler added 11 points. Â
Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines snapped their 21-game losing streak with their first victory of the season on Saturday, defeating Marygrove 69-40 on the road. Megan Swick, the lone Wolverine to average double figures, leads the team scoring 10.7 points per game. Kendall Rose adds 7.9 points per game. As a team Michigan-Dearborn is shooting 70.8% from the free throw line, a mark that ranks 45th nationally in NAIA Division II.
Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils have won nine straight games entering the week after posting a 67-62 victory over Madonna on Saturday. Lawrence Tech heads to Cornerstone on Wednesday before entertaining Lourdes. Christina Henry leads Lawrence Tech averaging 14.3 points per game while Allison Kitchen adds 13.6 points per night. Kitchen ranks third nationally shooting 61.6% from the floor on the season. As a team, the Blue Devils lead the country holding teams to just 25.6% shooting and are fourth outrebounding foes by 13.2 boards per night. Â
Facing Ranked Foes: When Lourdes battles Lawrence Tech on Saturday, it will mark just the second time the Gray Wolves have faced a top-25 opponent this season. The Gray Wolves dropped an 87-54 decision to #8 Davenport on the road back on Dec. 5. All-time, Lourdes is 1-24 against teams ranked in the NAIA top-25 poll, with the lone victory coming on Nov. 5, 2011 at #18 Indiana-Northwest 79-75.
Best Shooting Night of the Year: Lourdes shot 48.1% from the floor last Wednesday against Indiana Tech, the team's highest percentage in a game this season. The only other time the Gray Wolves have shot better than 44% in a contest this year was on Nov. 27 at Ohio Valley when the Gray Wolves connected at a 47.4% clip.
Thompson Posts Season High: Molea Thompson scored a season-high 16 points against Indiana Tech in just 22 minutes of action off of the bench. The sophomore has now tallied double figures on three different occasions this year.
McConnell One Shy of 300 Career Wins:Â Head coach
Karen McConnell is just one win shy of 300 for her career, which spans 22 seasons. The third year head coach has won 19 of her games while on the bench at Lourdes.
Among the Nation's Leaders: Lourdes has limited its opponents to 62.7 points per game this season, a mark that ranks 41st in NAIA Division II. Lourdes also ranks 47th nationally as a team averaging 9.67 steals per contest.
Fidler Among the National Leaders Individually: Jesse Fidler ranks 14th in the country in field goal percentage, connecting at a 53.2% clip. In addition, the sophomore is 16th nationally grabbing 3.67 offensive rebounds per contest. Fidler also ranks 21st in NAIA individually with 49 steals on the season and her 2.3 thefts per night rank 30th in NAIA Division II.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two sophomore captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2015-2016 are
Jesse Fidler and
Niki Meyer. The duo both had successful freshmen campaigns with the Gray Wolves.
This and That: Lourdes is 5-1 this season when leading at halftime, but 0-15 when trailing at the break ... the Gray Wolves have yet to win a game when surrendering 70 or more points in a contest ...
Samantha Enck ranks 20th nationally with a 2.17 assist-to-turnover ratio ... the Gray Wolves have used eight different starters this season.
