Lourdes opened the 2016-2017 basketball season on Saturday afternoon, playing its first game in the new Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center, but dropped a 92-75 decision to Midway.

"I was pleased with how we started the game competing hard, as well as the way we played in the fourth quarter," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said. "The second and third quarter show where we need to grow in our focus and maturity."

The Gray Wolves started fast, jumping out to a 14-6 lead in the game's first three-and-a-half minutes. A 20-2 run by Eagles allowed the visitors to build a 10-point advantage of its own before leading 26-21 after the opening 10 minutes.Â

Midway shot 60.5% in the first half, and closed the second quarter with a 23-6 run, increasing the lead to 51-29 at the break. In the third quarter, Eagles pushed the advantage to 37, 81-44, before the Gray Wolves made a valiant fourth quarter comeback effort.

Lourdes outscored Midway 31-11 over the final 10-minute period, shooting 60% as a team during the stanza, but ran out of time in the comeback bid.

Daja Whiteside (Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale H.S.) led Lourdes with a career-high 31 points, making 12-of-18 shots from the floor, including 4-of-6 from long distance.Â
Jesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) and
Taylor Geib (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) both had double-doubles in the opener. Fidler finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Geib, making her collegiate debut, had 11 points and 11 boards while also registering four steals.Â
Kalena Harris (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) added 12 points, giving the Gray Wolves four players in double figures.

Lourdes shot 44.1% from the floor, including 6-of-15 (40%) from three-point range, but were hampered by 17 turnovers.

Midway (1-0) finished 55.7% from the field and had 22 assists on 39 baskets. Breanna Ball led the Eagles with 28 points, making 13-of-17 shots from the floor, while Patrice Tonge added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Lourdes (0-1) will head to Georgetown, Ky. next Friday and Saturday for the Habitat for Humanity Classic. The Gray Wolves tip-off on Friday against Cumberlands at 6 p.m. at the Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
