Lourdes began a five-game road trip on Friday evening, suffering a 68-51 setback to the University of the Cumberlands at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym in Georgetown, Ky. to open the Habitat for Humanity Classic.
The Gray Wolves started slowly, committing 11 turnovers in the opening quarter while falling behind 14-2 after the first 10 minutes, and were never able to recover. Lourdes played the Patriots nearly even for the final three stanzas, but were unable to rally from the early deficit.
"Right now our focus is controlling our controllables," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said after the game. "Unfortunately we gave up 19 offensive boards, committed 29 turnovers, 23 of which were unforced, and missed 11 free throws. That's where our focus is to grow and make the program more competitive. We are playing hard, but we need to play hard and control those facets of the game."
Lourdes made just 4-of-22 (18.2%) shots from the floor in the first half while falling behind 27-14 at the break. The Gray Wolves began to heat up in the third quarter, shooting nearly 63% in the period, but it was too late for a comeback attempt.
Daja Whiteside (Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale H.S.) led Lourdes with 16 points while
Jesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) and
Rachel Losey (Otter Lake, Mich./Otter Lake H.S.) added nine points each.
Elayna Ackerman (Fremont, Ohio/Ross H.S.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, but the Gray Wolves were outrebounded 44-35 for the game. Defensively,
Taylor Geib (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) had five blocked shots for Lourdes.
Cheyenne Madden led Cumberlands (2-0) with 25 points and 15 rebounds, eight of which were on the offensive end of the floor. The Patriots shot 38.7% from the field for the game and committed 24 turnovers.
Lourdes (0-2) will return to Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Saturday for the final game of the Habitat for Humanity Classic, facing host Georgetown (Ky.). Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
