Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference slate begins this week for Lourdes University as the Gray Wolves take the floor for a pair of league contests. Lourdes will battle Aquinas on the road Wednesday evening in Grand Rapids, Mich. before returning home on Saturday to entertain Michigan-Dearborn.
On the Air: Saturday's game against Michigan-Dearborn will be broadcast live on BCSN on Buckeye Cablesystem. The game will also re air on BCSN at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. In addition, BCSN2 will show the game on Saturday at 10 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m.
Head Coach Josh Gibson: In his first season on the Lourdes bench
Josh Gibson has a 1-5 (.167) record. Overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Gibson has a 61-61 (.500) record in his fifth season. He is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes leads the all-time series against Aquinas 6-4 dating back to Nov. 30, 2011. The Saints have won the last three meetings between the two schools, including a 55-52 win in overtime in Grand Rapids and a 64-46 victory at Tam-o-Shanter last season. Aquinas holds a 3-2 series edge in Grand Rapids. Lourdes is 6-4 all-time against Michigan-Dearborn dating back to Jan. 14, 2012. The teams split last year's meetings, each winning on its own home floor. Lourdes was a 69-63 victor while the Wolverines posted a 74-70 victory. The Gray Wolves went 5-0 against Michigan-Dearborn at Tam-o-Shanter.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes was within six points of #1 Saint Francis (Ind.) with 15 minutes to play, but the Cougars pulled away for a 96-66 victory on Tuesday.Â
Najeeb Johnson led Lourdes with 18 points. On Friday, the Gray Wolves opened the MVNU Homecoming Classic suffering a 74-57 setback to host Mount Vernon Nazarene.Â
Kris Little tallied 12 points to pace Lourdes. On Saturday Shawnee State opened the second half with a 17-0 run on the way to a 66-46 victory over the Gray Wolves.Â
Darriontae Stewart scored 16 points to lead Lourdes.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints stopped a two-game losing skid last Wednesday with an 82-62 victory over Alma. Jake Bullock leads Aquinas averaging 16.2 points per game while Jeremy Williamson adds 15.4 points per night. Arsenio Arrington is the third Saint scoring in double figures, tallying 11.0 points per game. As a team Aquinas is averaging 75.0 points per game while surrendering 75.4 points per contest.
Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines enters the week having won four straight games after scoring a 69-66 victory over Spring Arbor last Saturday afternoon. Michigan-Dearborn hosts Davenport on Wednesday before battling Lourdes. Marcus Williams leads the Wolverines scoring 17.5 points per night while Xavier Crofford adds 12.8 points per contest. Jason Penn gives UMD a third double figure scorer, tallying 11.5 points and a team-high 7.5 boards per game.
WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 3-2 all-time in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference openers since joining the league prior to the 2011-2012 season. The Gray Wolves had their three-opener winning streak snapped last season when Lourdes suffered a 63-54 loss to #1 Cornerstone to open conference action.
Double-Double Time: Levert Bristol registered his first double-double as a Gray Wolf, and the first double-double of the season for Lourdes, last Tuesday at Saint Francis (Ind.). The senior scored 14 points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds in the setback against the top NAIA Division II team in the nation.
Lighting Up the Scoreboard: Darriontae Stewart entered Saturday's game against Shawnee State having scored 15 points total in the Gray Wolves' first five games of the season. The sophomore tallied 16 points against the Bears, marking a career-high for Stewart. His previous best at Lourdes came at Akron Wayne last season when he tallied 12 points.
Blocking Shots: Malik Thurman ranks 11th in NAIA Division II with 10 blocked shots already on the young season. His 1.67 rejections per contest are 19th best in the country. Thurman had four blocks against Shawnee State and has tallied at least one swat in all six games this year.
Free Throw Struggles: Lourdes has had a rough go of it at the charity stripe early in the 2016-2017 season, as the Gray Wolves are shooting just 56.7% from the free throw line as a team. Only once this season has Lourdes shot better than 67% from the stripe, a 70% (28-of-40) effort against Bethel (Ind.). Individually,
Levert Bristol leas the way shooting 90% from the line, but has taken just 10 attempts.
Lourdes Tabbed 10th in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Marygrove, and just behind Siena Heights. Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite after finishing as a NAIA national semifinalist two straight seasons.
