Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes remains on the road this week as the Gray Wolves play three times beginning on Saturday when they head to #1 Saint Francis (Ind.). Lourdes will then play in the MNVU Homecoming Classic this weekend, facing host Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday before facing ninth-ranked Indiana East or Shawnee State on Saturday.
Head Coach Josh Gibson: In his first season on the Lourdes bench
Josh Gibson has a 1-2 (.333) record. Overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Gibson has a 61-58 (.513) record in his fifth season. He is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Saint Francis (Ind.) won the only previous meeting against Lourdes, a 74-62 decision on Nov. 12, 2010 in Adrian, Mich. as part of the Maple City Classic. Mount Vernon Nazarene holds a 2-1 series edge which dates back to Dec. 13, 2010. The teams have split contests in Mount Vernon, Ohio, with Lourdes winning the last contest between the two schools, 62-51, on Dec. 30, 2011. Lourdes is 1-0 all-time against Indiana-East. The Gray Wolves won the only previous contest between the two teams 84-78 on Dec. 18, 2010 as part of the Malone Tournament in Canton, Ohio.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes fell behind by 18 points at halftime on Friday and was unable to make a second half comeback, falling to Goshen 74-58 on the first day of the Best Western Hoopfest.Â
Levert Bristol led Lourdes with 15 points and eight rebounds while
Najeeb Johnson added 12 points. Sixteenth-ranked Bethel (Ind.) shot 62.9% from the floor in the first half on Saturday and the Pilots defeated the Gray Wolves 104-73. Bristol paced Lourdes with 19 points and eight boards.
Scouting Saint Francis (Ind.): The Cougars, the nation's top NAIA Division II team, is undefeated this season after defeating Marygrove 113-68 on Saturday in the Huntington Classic. Vijay Blackmon leads five Cougars averaging in double figures, scoring 17.3 points per game while coming off of the bench. Kyle Sovine adds 12.3 points per night and is shooting 66.7% from the floor. Bryce Lienhoop is the team's top rebounder, pulling down 6.3 boards per contest. As a team Saint Francis is averaging 102.5 points per game and shooting 55.2% from the floor, including 49.5% (46-for-93) from three-point range.
Scouting Mount Vernon Nazarene: The Cougars have started the season 4-0 after downing Northwestern Ohio 81-59 on the road Saturday afternoon. Brett Vipperman leads four Cougars in double figures, averaging 14.0 points per game while Joey Schmitz and Trey McBride have each tallied 13.3 points per night. Josh Ashwill is the team's top rebounder, grabbing 8.0 boards per night. The Cougars are averaging 96.5 points per game and shooting 52.5% from the floor.
Scouting Indiana-East: The Red Wolves remained undefeated with a 91-63 victory over #22 Saint Xavier on Saturday in the IU East Red Wolf Classic. Indiana-East plays at Midway and faces Shawnee State before potentially playing the Gray Wolves. Lucas Huffman leads the Red Wolves scoring 16.7 points per game while Jacoby Claypool adds 13.0 points per night. Indiana-East is shooting 52.6% from the floor and averaging 92.0 points per game.
Scouting Shawnee State: The Bears suffered their first loss of the season on Oct. 29 against Ohio Christian 79-72 and face Indiana East on Friday before potentially meeting the Gray Wolves. Frederick Moore is scoring 18.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game while Jayllen Carter and Jacob Daniels added 17.5 points per night each. Shawnee State is scoring 83.5 points per game and shooting 48.1% from the field.
Bristol With a Big Weekend: Levert Bristol was solid all weekend at the Best Western Hoopfest, averaging 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while shooting 77.8% from the floor (14-for-18). He led the Gray Wolves in scoring in each game, tallying 15 points against Goshen and 19 versus Bethel (Ind.).
Super Sub: Evan Vasquez made his first two appearances of the season last weekend, and on Saturday finished second on the team in scoring. The freshman tallied 13 points against Bethel (Ind.), making all three of his shots from the floor while getting to the free throw line nine times.
Against Ranked Foes: Lourdes is 8-32 all-time against NAIA Division II top-25 opponents. The Gray Wolves lost to #16 Bethel (Ind.) already this season, and have dropped nine straight games against nationally-ranked teams. Lourdes last win against a ranked team was a 53-32 victory over fourth-ranked Davenport at home on Feb. 18, 2015. Lourdes has faced the number one team in the nation three times, and is still looking for its first win.
Lourdes Tabbed 10th in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Marygrove, and just behind Siena Heights. Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite after finishing as a NAIA national semifinalist two straight seasons.
This and That: Levert Bristol ranks 16th in NAIA Division II shooting 64.3% from the floor ... as a team Lourdes is 16th nationally in three-point field goal defense, limiting the opposition to just 26.1% ... Lourdes is shooting just 56.6% from the free throw line this season ... the Gray Wolves are five wins shy of 100 in program history.
