Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes begins a four-game homestand on Wednesday as the Gray Wolves host second-ranked Cornerstone. The homestand continues on Saturday as Indiana Tech visits the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center before Lourdes faces 14th-ranked Rochester (Mich.) on Monday in non-conference action.
Head Coach Josh Gibson: In his first season on the Lourdes bench
Josh Gibson has a 2-9 (.182) record. Overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Gibson has a 62-65 (.488) record in his fifth season. He is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Cornerstone leads the all-time series against Lourdes 11-1 dating back to Dec. 10, 2011. The Golden Eagles have won nine straight meetings between the two schools after sweeping last year's meetings. Cornerstone was a 63-54 victor at Tam-o-Shanter before posting a 74-61 triumph in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Golden Eagles were 4-0 all-time against Lourdes at Tam-o-Shanter. Lourdes and Indiana Tech have split 12 previous meetings 6-6. Last year the Warriors posted a 78-48 win in Fort Wayne, Ind. and a 55-46 victory at Tam-o-Shanter. Indiana Tech held a 3-2 series edge all-time at Tam-o-Shanter. Rochester (Mich.) has won the only two previous meetings against Lourdes, with both coming during the 2010-2011 campaign. The Warriors scored a 74-48 win at Tam-o-Shanter and a 76-61 triumph in Rochester Hills, Mich.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Evan Vasquez forced overtime with his basket at the end of regulation, but the Gray Wolves were unable to create last minute heroics in overtime on Wednesday night, falling to Madonna 79-78 at home.Â
Desmond Frazier led Lourdes with 27 points while
Levert Bristol added 24 more. Lourdes fell behind early on Saturday at Marygrove and was unable to recover, suffering a 78-68 loss to the Mustangs. Frazier led Lourdes with 17 points in the loss while
Hamish Abbott added 15 more.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles have won 10 straight games following a season-opening loss after defeating Indiana Tech 72-54 on the road Saturday. Kyle Steigenga leads Cornerstone averaging 21.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while Cory Cox adds 17.7 points per night. Michael McLaughlin and Sam Vander Sluis add 10.9 points per contest each. As a team Cornerstone is shooting 48% from the floor and averaging 84.7 points per game.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors enter the week having dropped three of their last four games after falling 72-54 to second-ranked Cornerstone at home on Saturday. Indiana Tech plays host to Aquinas on Wednesday before heading to Lourdes. Miles Robinson leads Indiana Tech averaging 20.7 points per game while Lavonte Davis adds 13.0 points per night. The Warriors have six players averaging in double figures on the year. As a team Indiana Tech is shooting 42.9% from the floor and scoring 76.9 points per night.
Scouting Rochester (Mich.): The Warriors enter the week having won four straight games after posting a 70-42 win over Moody Bible on Saturday. Rochester faces fifth-ranked Indiana-East on Saturday before heading to Lourdes. Angleo Griffis leads Rochester averaging 20.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while Jaylen Larry adds 14.4 points per night and is shooting 67.1% from the floor. As a team the Warriors are averaging 82.7 points per game and shooting 50.4% from the floor.
More Ranked Opponents: Lourdes will face two more ranked opponents over the next week when the Gray Wolves battle second-ranked Cornerstone on Wednesday and 14th-ranked Rochester (Mich.) on Monday night. The Gray Wolves are 0-2 this season against NAIA Top-25 foes, having dropped games to #16 Bethel (Ind.) and #1 Saint Francis (Ind.). All-time, Lourdes is 8-33 against ranked foes, with the Gray Wolves' last win coming Feb. 18, 2015, a 53-32 victory over fourth-ranked Davenport.
Frazier Lighting Up the Scoreboard: Desmond Frazier has produced his two highest scoring outputs of the season over the last week. On Wednesday against Madonna, the sophomore poured in 27 points, the most by a Lourdes player this season, making 11-of-17 shots from the floor, including all eight inside of the arc. He added a team-high 17 points on Saturday against Marygrove for his third straight double figure scoring game. Frazier has increased his season scoring average by 3.2 points over the last three games, and is now tallying 9.7 points per contest.
Thurman Among Nation's Blocks Leaders: Malike Thurman ranks 25th in all of NAIA Division II averaging 1.46 blocked shots per game this season. The junior has 16 rejections in the Gray Wolves' 11 games, a total that is the 19th highest in the country.
Lourdes Tabbed 10th in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Marygrove, and just behind Siena Heights. Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite after finishing as a NAIA national semifinalist two straight seasons.
This and That: Lourdes is 1-5 all-time in overtime after falling to Madonna on Wednesday ... the Gray Wolves last win in an extra session came against Point Park, 92-88, on Dec. 11, 2013 ... Lavert Bristol and
Najeeb Johnson are the lone Gray Wolves to start all 11 games this year ... Lourdes' game at Rochester (Mich.) on Dec. 20 will now be played at Oakland University and tip off at 4 p.m.
