Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: The penultimate week of the 2015-2016 season has arrived and Lourdes begins its final three-game road trip of the year with a pair of contests in the state of Michigan. The Gray Wolves head to Marygrove on Wednesday evening before traveling to Madonna on Saturday for a matinee affair.
Head Coach Karen McConnell: In her second season on the Lourdes bench
Karen McConnell has a 20-64 (.238) record. Overall as a women's collegiate head coach, McConnell has a 300-311 (.491) record in her 22nd season. She is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 7-1 all-time series advantage against Marygrove dating back to Nov. 2, 2011, after the Gray Wolves won the meeting earlier this season at Tam-o-Shanter 88-49 on Jan. 13. Lourdes holds a 3-1 series edge in games played in Detroit. Madonna is 9-0 all-time against Lourdes dating back to Jan. 11, 2012. The Crusaders defeated the Gray Wolves 75-56 on Jan. 2 at Tam-o-Shanter. Madonna is 4-0 in the series in Livonia, Mich.
Earlier This Season: Lourdes held Marygrove to just 23% shooting from the floor on Jan. 13 and defeated the Mustangs 88-49 at Tam-o-Shanter.Â
Jesse Fidler led the Gray Wolves with 19 points and 16 rebounds while
Lindsey Motycka added 14 points. Teonna Pope led Marygrove with 16 points while Breanna Thomas had 11 points and 19 boards. On Jan. 2 Madonna built a 14-point halftime lead, and defeated Lourdes 75-56 at Tam-o-Shanter.Â
Niki Meyer tallied a game-high 23 points for the Gray Wolves while Lindsey Hernden led the Crusaders with 21 points. Becca Sabol added 19 points and 13 boards.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Concordia (Mich.) pulled away in the third quarter on Wednesday evening and defeated Lourdes 60-47.Â
Mariah DuPree and
Molea Thompson led the Gray Wolves with 10 points each. On Saturday, Lourdes led 10th-ranked Davenport by three at halftime, but the Panthers held the Gray Wolves to just 17 second half points and posted a 66-40 victory.Â
Constance Conner led Lourdes with 17 points while
Jesse Fidler pulled down 11 rebounds.
Scouting Marygrove: The Mustangs have dropped 19 straight games following an 86-73 setback on the road at Madonna on Saturday afternoon. Elisha Major leads Marygrove averaging 17.8 points per game, and ranks third in NAIA Division II averaging 3.0 steals per game. Teonna Pope adds 15.3 points per contest while Breanna Thomas chips in 10.2 points per game. Thomas also ranks 16th nationally grabbing 9.71 rebounds per night.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders have won four straight games after downing Marygrove 86-73 at home on Saturday afternoon. Madonna heads to Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday before entertaining Lourdes. Becca Sabol, the reigning two-time WHAC Player of the Week, leads the Crusaders averaging 16.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Lindsey Hernden adds 16.5 points per night, and ranks fifth in the country making 3.64 triples per night. Cris Harper adds 10.9 points per contest. Â
A Solid Defensive Half: Lourdes played one of its best halves of basketball on the defensive end of the floor on Saturday against 10th-ranked Davenport. The Gray Wolves held the Panthers, a team that entered play averaging more than 86 points per game, to just 20 points in the opening 20 minutes of action. Davenport committed 10 turnovers and shot just 33.3% from the floor as Lourdes built a 23-20 lead at the break.
Conner Records Career High: Constance Conner entered her senior season having scored 12 career points. This year she has made the most of her opportunities, averaging 5.2 points per contest. On Saturday, she scored a career-high 17 points in 29 minutes off of the bench. Her previous high of 12 points came earlier this season against Madonna and Marygrove, but she has also notched five double figure scoring games.
DuPree Adds Double Figure Effort: Mariah DuPree entered last Wednesday's game with just two career double figure scoring efforts. The junior guard shared the team's scoring lead with
Molea Thompson against Concordia (Mich.), with each player pouring in 10 points. DuPree added seven points against Davenport on Saturday, and has increased her scoring average to 4.2 points per game this year.
Among the Nation's Leaders: Lourdes has limited its opponents to 62.0 points per game this season, a mark that ranks 33rd in NAIA Division II. Lourdes also ranks 38th nationally as a team averaging 9.88 steals per contest.
Fidler Among the National Leaders Individually: Jesse Fidler ranks 14th in the country in offensive rebounding, grabbing 3.76 boards per night. Fidler also ranks 27th in field goal percentage, connecting at a 51.2% clip. In addition, Fidler also ranks 16th in NAIA individually with 60 steals on the season and her 2.4 thefts per night rank 27th in NAIA Division II.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two sophomore captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2015-2016 are
Jesse Fidler and
Niki Meyer. The duo both had successful freshmen campaigns with the Gray Wolves.
This and That: Jesse Fidler is 31 points shy of 600 for her career ... seven different players have led, or shared the team lead, in scoring over the course of the season ... Lourdes is outscoring its opponents 349-330 in the opening quarter this season.
