Lourdes was unable to overcome 25% shooting from the floor and 19 turnovers on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves concluded the first half of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play with a 68-43 defeat at the hands of Siena Heights at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
The Gray Wolves shot below 30% in each of the four quarters and were outrebounded by the Saints 49-29 on the evening.
Â
"We are striving to focus on our three main controllables; rebounding, valuing the possession of the ball, and defensive rotations, which in turn effects our fouls," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said after the game. "Tonight we rebounded very little, turned the ball over too much, and committed too many fouls. It is difficult to beat the opponent when you're too busy defeating yourself."
Â
Siena Heights closed the opening quarter on a 15-1 run, holding the Gray Wolves without a field goal for the final 7:56 of the period while building a 25-8 lead. In the second quarter, Lourdes limited the Saints to just six shot attempts while forcing nine turnovers, but managed to tally just nine points offensively and trailed 37-17 at intermission.
Â
Lourdes made a run to start the second half, scoring 12 of the first 14 points to pull within 10, 39-29, with 7:22 to play in the quarter. The Gray Wolves would not sore the remainder of the period though, with the Saints using a 12-0 run to rebuild a 22-point lead heading to the final stanza. Both teams struggled from the floor over the final 10 minutes, but Siena Heights was able to maintain a 17-to-22-point lead throughout, building its largest lead in the final two minutes of the game.
Â
Molea Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison H.S.) led Lourdes with 10 points, the only Gray Wolf to tally double figures on the evening.Â
Mariah DuPree (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) added nine points and
Kalena Harris (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) added eight more for Lourdes.
Â
April Watson led Siena Heights (13-6, 6-5 WHAC) with a double-double, posting 19 points and 16 rebounds while adding three blocked shots. The Saints shot 48.9% from the field to overcome 25 turnovers on the night.
Â
"We must regain our focus with a much stronger mindset if we are to compete among our fellow conference opponents," Quesenberry added.
Â
Lourdes (5-14, 3-8) will begin the second round of WHAC play on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Dearborn, Mich. to battle Michigan-Dearborn. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at the UMD Fieldhouse.
