Aquinas and Marygrove to Visit Lourdes in Men's Basketball

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: A three-game homestand begins for Lourdes this week with a pair of games at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.  The Gray Wolves welcome Aquinas to town on Wednesday evening before entertaining Marygrove for a Saturday matinee as Lourdes looks to battle back into position for a WHAC tournament berth.

Head Coach Josh Gibson: In his first season on the Lourdes bench Josh Gibson has a 3-16 (.158) record.  Overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Gibson has a 63-72 (.467) record in his fifth season.  He is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Lourdes leads the all-time series against Aquinas 6-5 dating back to Nov. 30, 2011.  The Saints have won the last four meetings between the two schools, including an 85-59 victory in Grand Rapids, Mich. earlier this season on Nov. 16.  Lourdes went 2-1 against Aquinas at Tam-o-Shanter and won its two other "home" games against the Saints at the Stroh Center and Owens CC.  The Gray Wolves lead the all-time series with Marygrove 7-4 dating back to Jan. 3, 2011.  The Mustangs won the first meeting this year 78-68 in Detroit, Mich. on Dec. 3.  Lourdes went 4-1 against Marygrove in games played at Tam-o-Shanter.

Earlier This Season: Aquinas shot better than 50% from the floor on Nov. 16 and defeated Lourdes 85-59 in Grand Rapids, Mich. in the WHAC opener for each team.  Levert Bristol and Najeeb Johnson led the Gray Wolves with 13 points each while Jake Bullock tallied 20 points to pace the Saints.  Marygrove shot 52% over the opening 20 minutes on Dec. 3 in Detroit, Mich. and defeated Lourdes 78-68.  Desmond Frazier led the Gray Wolves with 17 points and Lourdes committed just nine turnovers in the loss.  Nate Taylor led Marygrove with 23 points and 12 rebounds, going 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the victory.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes battled back from a 17-point first half deficit to pull within four late on Wednesday, but Siena Heights hung on for a 69-61 win at the Ebeid Rec Center.  Levert Bristol led Lourdes with 17 points while Anthony Swanigan added 16 more.  The Gray Wolves committed just six turnovers in the loss, but shot just 36.1% from the floor.  On Saturday, Michigan-Dearborn jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead and defeated the Gray Wolves 75-60 in Dearborn, Mich.  Desmond Frazier led all scorers with 21 points for Lourdes, making 7-of-11 from three-point range while Anthony Swanigan added 15 more.  The Gray Wolves were hampered by 15 turnovers in the setback.

Scouting Aquinas: The Saints have dropped two straight games after suffering an 82-64 setback at home against eighth-ranked Davenport on Saturday afternoon.  Jake Bullock leads Aquinas offensively averaging 18.2 points per game while Jeremy Williamson adds 16.1 points per night for the Saints.  Aquinas is shooting 45.4% from the floor and averaging 78.5 points per game.

Scouting Marygrove: The Mustangs enter the week having dropped seven of their last eight games after falling at 21st-ranked Northwestern Ohio 82-80 on Saturday.  Nate Taylor leads Marygrove averaging 18.2 points per game on the year while pulling down 9.7 rebounds per contest.  The Mustangs host top-ranked Cornerstone on Wednesday before heading to Lourdes.

A Bunched Race for a Tournament Berth: Despite enter the week in 11th place in the WHAC standings, Lourdes is just two games out of eighth place and the final WHAC tournament berth.  The Gray Wolves have a chance to make up ground on this homestand hosting sixth place Aquinas, 10th place Marygrove, and ninth place Concordia (Mich.).

From Downtown: Desmond Frazier made a team-high seven three-point field goals on Saturday at Michigan-Dearborn, doing so in just 11 attempts.  Frazier leads the Gray Wolves with 39 triples this year (2.1 per game) and is shooting 36.8% from beyond the arc.

Taking Care of the Basketball: Lourdes committed a team-low six turnovers last Wednesday against Siena Heights.  The Gray Wolves have committed fewer than 10 miscues in two of their last three games, lowering their season average to 14.2.  

Swanigan Making an Impact: Anthony Swanigan has made an impact over the last six games, shooting 58.0% from the floor.  The senior has connected on 6-of-14 (42.9%) three-point attempts and is averaging a team-leading 17.0 points per game.  He has scored 15 or more points in each of the last five games.  Swanigan also leads the Gray Wolves in rebounding, pulling down 6.7 boards per night and has blocked eight shots, second most on the squad.

Stergis Breaks Out: Kyle Stergis had scored just 30 points in his first nine games this season for the Gray Wolves, but the sophomore made significant contributions last Wednesday against Siena Heights.  Stergis poured in a career-high 11 points, the first double figure game of his career, making 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

Among Nation's Leaders: As a team, Lourdes is allowing 76.37 points per game, a mark that ranks 48th nationally among all NAIA Division II teams.

This and That: Najeeb Johnson has tallied double figures in 12 of his last 13 games ... Anthony Swanigan is nine points shy of 300 for his career at Lourdes ... Najeeb Johnson and Levert Bristol are the only two Gray Wolves to start all 19 games this season.
