Men's Hoops Closes Road Trip This Week

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes flips the calendar to 2017, and the in the process will wrap up a three-game road trip with a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contests this week.  The Gray Wolves travel to 25th-ranked Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday night before heading to Lawrence Tech for a Saturday afternoon contest.

Head Coach Josh Gibson: In his first season on the Lourdes bench Josh Gibson has a 2-13 (.133) record.  Overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Gibson has a 62-69 (.473) record in his fifth season.  He is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Lourdes leads the all-time series against Northwestern Ohio 7-6 dating back to Dec. 30, 2010.  The Gray Wolves and Racers split last year's meetings, with Lourdes posting a 62-50 victory at Tam-o-Shanter before UNOH answered with a 78-66 triumph in Lima, Ohio.  Northwestern Ohio holds a 4-3 series edge in games played in Lima.  Lourdes holds a 7-2 series lead against Lawrence Tech dating back to Nov. 3, 2012.  The Gray Wolves downed the Blue Devils 57-54 at Tam-o-Shanter last year before Lawrence Tech rebounded with a 61-40 win in Southfield, Mich.  The all-time series is tied 2-2 in Southfield.

Wrapping Up Last Week (or Two Weeks Ago): Lourdes took a six-point lead into halftime on Dec. 20 before ninth-ranked Rochester (Mich.) went on a 20-2 run to defeat the Gray Wolves 75-63.  Anthony Swanigan led Lourdes with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Najeeb Johnson added 15 points as the Gray Wolves shot 51% from the floor on the evening.

Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers ring in 2017 having won five of their last six games following an 80-79 triumph over third-ranked Indiana Wesleyan on Dec. 29.  Lawrence Jackson leads three Racers averaging in double figures, scoring 16.0 points per night, while also grabbing a team-leading 7.5 rebounds per game.  Sadeeq Bello adds 15.7 points per game while Corbin Pierce chips in 13.3 points per contest.  As a team UNOH is shooting 44% from the floor and averaging 74.6 points per game.

Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils ended 2016 by snapping a nine-game losing streak on Dec. 29 with an 86-83 victory at Holy Cross (Ind.).  Lawrence Tech heads to Indiana Tech on Wednesday before hosting Lourdes.  Payton DeWildt leads the Blue Devils averaging 13.5 points per contest while Robbie Geoghegan adds 11.8 points per night.  As a team Lawrence Tech is shooting 38.8% from the floor and scoring 65.8 points per game.

Looking to Ring in the New Year with a Win: Lourdes looks to move over .500 all-time in its first game of the calendar year on Wednesday at Northwestern Ohio.  The Gray Wolves are 3-3 to open the month of January, but have dropped games to start the year each of the last two seasons.  Lourdes last win to begin January came Jan. 4, 2014 at home against Marygrove.

Brutal Stretch: Lourdes is wrapping up a stretch of games which have seen the Gray Wolves face four NAIA Division II ranked opponents in a five-game span.  The Gray Wolves would have had a five ranked foes during the stretch had the Rochester (Mich.) game not been cancelled on Dec. 12 due to weather.  Lourdes has already faced #2 Cornerstone (Dec. 7) #11 Davenport (Dec. 17)and #9 Rochester (Mich.) (Dec. 20) during this span, and  the Gray Wolves will face #25 Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday.  Lourdes is 0-5 against top-25 teams this season and 8-36 all-time, with the last win coming Feb. 18, 2015 against #4 Davenport.  

Welcome Back: Anthony Swanigan made his return to the court for the Gray Wolves on Dec. 17, and the senior has already made an impact in his first two games.  He is averaging 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest while shooting 61.9% from the floor in the two contests.  Against Rochester (Mich.), Swanigan tallied a double-double with 17 points, on 8-of-12 shooting, and 13 rebounds.  The double-double was the second of his Lourdes career.

A Good Shooting Night: Lourdes shot 51.0% from the floor at Rochester (Mich.) on Dec. 20, marking just the second time this season the Gray Wolves have finished above 50% for the contest as a team.  Lourdes connected at a 56.0% clip in the win against Michigan-Dearborn on Nov. 19.

From Downtown: The Gray Wolves drained nine three-pointers in the win against Rochester (Mich.), matching a season high which had been accomplished three other times.  Lourdes shot a season's best 50% from beyond the arc in the loss, marking one of three times the Gray Wolves have been higher than 40% this season.

Among Nation's Leaders: Malik Thurman ranks 39th in all of NAIA Division II averaging 1.27 blocked shots this season.  As a team, Lourdes is allowing 76.8 points per game, a mark that ranks 49th nationally.

This and That: Lourdes has dropped 13 straight games against NAIA Division II top-25 opponents heading into the Northwestern Ohio game ... Najeeb Johnson and Levert Bristol are the only Gray Wolves to start all 15 games this season ... Najeeb Johnson leads the team in scoring with 202 points this season ... six Gray Wolves, including assist leader Desmond Frazier, have a positive assist-to-turnover ratio for the campaign.
