Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes brings a three-game winning streak into the week as Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play is about to begin. The Gray Wolves host Aquinas on Wednesday in the league opener before taking to the road on Saturday to face Michigan-Dearborn.
On the Air: Wednesday's game against Aquinas will be broadcast tape-delayed on BCSN and BCSN2 as part of Buckeye Broadband. The game will air on BCSN on Friday morning at 1:30 a.m. while BCSN2 will carry the contest on Thursday at 3 a.m. and 9 p.m.
Head Coach Josh Gibson: In his second season on the Lourdes bench
Josh Gibson has an 11-23 (.324) record. Overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Gibson has a 72-81 (.471) record in his sixth season. He is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Aquinas have split their 12 previous meetings 6-6 dating back to Nov. 30, 2011. Last season the Saints swept the season series, winning 85-59 in Grand Rapids, Mich. and 62-41 at the Ebeid Rec Center, extending their series winning streak to five straight games. Lourdes holds a 4-2 series edge in home games, but is 0-1 against Aquinas at the Ebeid Rec Center. Lourdes holds a 7-5 series edge against Michigan-Dearborn dating back to Jan. 14, 2012. The teams split a pair of meetings, each defending their home floor last year. The Gray Wolves posted a 68-64 win at the Ebeid Rec Center and the Wolverines were 75-60 victors in Dearborn. Michigan-Dearborn is 5-1 against Lourdes in Dearborn.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes shot 50% from the floor in the second half on Tuesday and pulled away from Wright State-Lake late in an 81-67 victory on the road.
Malik Thurman led the Gray Wolves with 17 points while
McRay White pulled down 10 rebounds. On Saturday Lourdes rallied from 16 points down with six minutes to play to defeat Carlow 78-74 in overtime at the Ebeid Rec Center.
Clif Snow had a game-high 18 points and pulled down eight boards for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints have dropped back-to-back games after falling 72-67 at Olivet Nazarene on Saturday. Aquinas has yet to play a home game in 2017-2018. Arsenio Arrington leads the Saints averaging 13.6 points per game while Frank DeVos adds 9.4 points per night. Opeyemi Sholesi has pulled down a team-high 5.8 rebounds per contest coming off the bench.
Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines have won a pair of WHAC contests early in the season, but are coming off of back-to-back exhibition setbacks to NCAA Division I foes Eastern Michigan and Detroit on Sunday and Monday. During the regular season, Mafiaion Joyner leads Michigan-Dearborn averaging 17.7 points per game while Jason Penn adds 16.7 points and a team-high 9.3 rebounds per contest. Xavier Crawford (12.8 ppg) and Gage Throgmorton (12.0 ppg) are both scoring in double figures as well.
Lourdes in WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 3-3 all-time opening up Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play. Last season the Gray Wolves fell 85-59 at Aquinas to kickoff the league slate. Lourdes last won a conference opener on Nov. 15, 2014, a 67-48 victory over Michigan-Dearborn at home.
Matching the Best Five-Game Start: Lourdes has started the season 4-1 for the third time in program history, and the first since the 2014-2015 season. The Gray Wolves are looking for a pair of wins this week to match the best start ever with just one defeat, a 6-1 mark accomplished by the 2013-2014 team.
Ending the Overtime Skid: Lourdes won its first overtime contest since Dec. 11, 2013 against Point Park on Saturday afternoon with the victory over Carlow. The Gray Wolves had dropped four straight extra session contests since the last win, including two last season, and was just 1-6 all-time in overtime games in program history prior to the triumph over the Celtics.
Thurman Leading the Way: Malik Thurman has tallied double figures in each of the Gray Wolves' last three games to take the scoring lead. The senior is averaging 13.0 points per contest on the year while shooting 69.0% from the floor. He tallied 17 in last week's win at Wright State-Lake and added 13 more in the come-from-behind triumph over Carlow.
Getting Defensive: Lourdes is allowing just 64.4 points per game on the season, a mark that ranks 11th among all NAIA Division II schools. In addition, the Gray Wolves are 16th nationally limiting the opposition to just 38.8% shooting from the floor.
Lourdes Tabbed 10th in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Lawrence Tech and just behind Concordia (Mich.) in the league balloting. Cornerstone was the unanimous pick to win the WHAC in 2017-2018, and is the preseason #1 team in the nation in NAIA Division II.
