Closing out the home portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon, Lourdes maintained a halftime lead, but Lawrence Tech battled back in the second half to defeat the Gray Wolves 77-63 on Senior Day at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
"We played a strong first half, unfortunately in the third quarter we had too many miscues on defense which allowed Lawrence Tech to score easy points in transition," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said afterwards. "Their third quarter run proved to be the difference in the game."
Â
There were seven lead changes in the opening quarter before the Blue Devils scored six unanswered points near the end of the period to build their biggest lead of the stanza, five, before Lourdes scored the final basket to pull within 18-15 after 10 minutes.Â
Â
The Gray Wolves trailed by four with seven minutes to play before halftime before closing with a 13-4 run.Â
Jesse Fidler's (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) three-point play with two seconds remaining put Lourdes in front 32-27 heading into the locker room.Â
Â
Lourdes led 36-31 two minutes into the second half before seven straight Blue Devil points put the guests in front for good. Lawrence Tech extended its lead to six, 52-46, after three quarters, and led by 11 with 6:48 to play in the game. The Gray Wolves cut the deficit back to six, 63-57, on a
Payton Ramey (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas H.S.) basket with 2:48 to play. However, the Blue Devils' 14-4 run that ensued, including a 10-for-12 effort from the free throw line down the stretch, put the game out of reach.
Â
Elayna Ackerman (Fremont, Ohio/Ross H.S.) led Lourdes with 15 points while Fidler added 12 points and nine boards. The Gray Wolves finished the game shooting 35.3% from the floor, including just 4-of-20 from three-point range.
Â
Nicole Buckingham led Lawrence Tech (15-12, 11-9 WHAC) with 24 points and nine rebounds while Hayley Walkowski added 16 points off the bench. The Blue Devils shot 46.4% from the field and held a 42-37 rebounding advantage.
Â
Prior to the game Lourdes honored its two seniors,
Mariah DuPree (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) and
Daja Whiteside (Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale H.S.).
Â
"Our program would like to acknowledge our seniors Daja and Mariah for their dedication to the women's basketball program over the past four seasons and wish them the best of luck and much success in their next endeavors off the court," Quesenberry added.
Â
Lourdes (7-21, 5-15) will begin the final week of the season on Wednesday evening traveling to Madonna. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Activities Center in Livonia, Mich.
