Madonna Tops Lourdes 101-93 in Wednesday Night Shootout

Lourdes had six players finish in double figures on Wednesday evening, but Lourdes came up just short in a 101-93 contest against Madonna at the Activities Center in Livonia, Mich.

Daja Whiteside (Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale H.S.) came off of the bench to post a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds while Payton Ramey (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas H.S.) posted a career-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Ramey also recorded four steals.

Elayna Ackerman (Fremont, Ohio/Ross H.S.) also had four steals to go along with her 10 points while Jesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) and Lindsey Motycka (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview H.S.) each tallied 10 points as well.  Molea Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison H.S.) poured in 12 points.

"We played hard and fought all the way to the end," head coach Summer Quesenberry said after the game.

Madonna led throughout the first half, although Lourdes stayed close, trailing by just three, 25-22, after the opening period.  A 9-1 run in the second allowed the Crusaders to open up a double figure lead, as the hosts held the Gray Wolves without a field goal for nearly five minutes.  Madonna eventually led 44-36 at the break.

Lourdes scored the first seven points of the third to pull within one, and continued the 14-3 run to take a three-point lead 50-47, with 6:16 to play after a basket by Whiteside.  Madonna responded with a 12-1 spurt of its own to rebuild a double figure lead, and extended it to 11, 73-62, heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Crusaders pushed the lead to as many as 16 in the fourth before Lourdes battled back.  Trailing 95-81 with 1:22 to play, Motycka hit two threes and Ramey added another as part of an 11-2 spurt over the next 1:05, but the Gray Wolves ran out of time and Madonna made free throws down the stretch.

After shooting just 33% from the floor in the opening half, Lourdes shot better than 52% over the final 20 minutes to battle back.  Lourdes finished the game with 23 turnovers though.

"Turnovers against proved to be the difference in the game," Quesenberry added.  "We were unable to overcome 23 turnovers which led to 28 Madonna points."

Becca Sabol led Madonna (15-11, 11-10 WHAC) with 24 points and 14 rebounds while Michele Hayes added 21 points and eight assists.  Five Crusaders finished in double figures on the night as Madonna shot 45.7% from the field overall.  The Crusaders also shot 56 free throws, making 34.

Lourdes (7-22, 5-16) will close out its 2016-2017 season on Saturday evening as the Gray Wolves head to Adrian, Mich. to face 25th-ranked Siena Heights.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the SHU Fieldhouse.
