Head Coach Josh Gibson: In his second season on the Lourdes bench
Josh Gibson has a 17-33 (.340) record with the Gray Wolves. Overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Gibson has a 78-91 (.462) record in his sixth season. He is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Cornerstone leads the all-time series against Lourdes 14-1 dating back to Dec. 10, 2011, and has won 12 straight meetings against the Gray Wolves. The Golden Eagles won the first meeting of the season at the Ebeid Rec Center 72-64 on Dec. 6. Cornerstone is 7-1 against Lourdes all-time in Grand Rapids. Indiana Tech holds a 9-6 series edge against the Gray Wolves dating back to Oct. 30, 2010. The Warriors have won five straight meetings against Lourdes after posting a 70-55 win earlier this season on Dec. 9. In the only previous meeting in the Ebeid Rec Center, Indiana Tech earned a 67-65 overtime victory last season.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes shot just 28.3% from the floor on Wednesday (Jan. 17) evening and committed 14 turnovers in a 73-39 loss at Aquinas. The Saints jumped out to a 13-point halftime lead and pulled away over the final 10 minutes of the second half.Â
Kadeim Jones led Lourdes with 11 points in the loss while Arsenio Arrington had a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds for Aquinas.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles had their 19-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, suffering a 74-67 loss in overtime at Indiana Tech. Kyle Steigenga leads Cornerstone averaging 20.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per night. Sam Vander Sluis adds 15.6 points and 12.1 rebounds per outing while Michael Bradshaw is scoring 14.5 points per game. Cornerstone is shooting 48.6% from the floor and scoring 80.3 points per game while allowing 67.1 points per night.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors have won five of their last six games after defeating top-ranked Cornerstone 74-67 in overtime on Saturday. Indiana Tech hosts Aquinas Wednesday before heading to Lourdes. Darren Groves leads five Warriors in double figures scoring 14.5 points and grabbing 7.8 rebounds per game. Dylan Phair and Max Huber add 12.5 and 12.1 points per night respectively. As a team, Indiana Tech is shooting 47.7% from the field and scoring 81.3 points per outing while yielding just 70.0 points per night.
Jones Returns to Double Figures: Kadeim Jones was the only Gray Wolf to score in double figures last week in the loss at Aquinas, scoring a team-high 11 points. The freshman guard had not tallied double figures since scoring 10 points against Akron Wayne on Dec. 30. The Akron Wayne contest was his only double digit effort in his last eight games. On the season, Jones has scored in double figures on nine occasions, with a season-high 17 points coming against Judson (Nov. 4), Concordia (Mich.) (Nov. 21), and at Madonna (Nov. 29).
Facing Ranked Opponents: With a pair of NAIA Division II top-five opponents on the schedule this week, Lourdes is looking for its first victory over a ranked foe since defeating fourth-ranked Davenport 53-32 on Feb. 18, 2015. The Gray Wolves have dropped 19 straight games to ranked foes, including both previous games this season against second-ranked Cornerstone (72-64) and at fifth-ranked Indiana Tech (70-55). Lourdes has never defeated a team ranked higher than fourth in program history, and is 8-42 all-time against top-25 opponents.
Playing Solid Defense: Lourdes ranks fourth among all NAIA Division II schools in scoring defense, allowing just 67.2 points per game. The Gray Wolves have ranked in the top-seven nationally in scoring defense every season except last year dating back to 2011-2012. Last season the Gray Wolves finished 28th in the country allowing 74.0 points per night. Lourdes led the country in 2012-2013, surrendering just 51.3 points per game that season.
Thurman and Snow in Double Figures: Malik Thurman is averaging a team-leading 10.9 points per game this season for the Gray Wolves. The senior is shooting 51.3% from the floor, including a team-best 51.7% from three-point range on the year.Â
Clif Snow is the only other Lourdes player tallying double figures, scoring 10.2 points per night. Snow is shooting 83.9% from the free throw line, tops on the team.
Reaching 10 Wins: With the victory over Michigan-Dearborn on Jan. 13, the Gray Wolves have reached the 10-win plateau, matching the most victories for Lourdes in a season since 2014-2015. The Gray Wolves also won 10 games during the 2015-2016 campaign, and have surpassed last season's win total of seven.
Among the Nation's Best: The Gray Wolves rank 17th nationally allowing opponents to shoot 42.0% from the floor this season. Lourdes is 18th in the country registering 8.6 steals per night while their 2.43 turnover margin is 26th best in the country. Lourdes is also 37th nationally in three-point field goal percentage defense at 33.8% while the Gray Wolves are blocking 3.0 shots per night, 42nd best in the country.
This and That: Malik Thurman is seven points shy of 450 for his two-year career at Lourdes ... the Gray Wolves have not won a game this season when shooting a lower percentage from the floor than their opponents, but are 10-1 when shooting better than the opposition ... not one player is averaging more than 28 minutes per game this year for Lourdes.
