Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes looks to bounce back from a season-opening setback this week with a pair of contests. Â The Gray Wolves remain on the road Tuesday evening when they head to Grace Christian before hosting Olivet on Saturday night in the team's home opener on Homecoming weekend.
Head Coach John Kenger: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
John Kenger sports an 11-19 (.367) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. Â In his fifth season overall as a women's collegiate head coach, Kenger has a 50-73 (.407) career mark. Â He is the fourth head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 2-0 all-time against Grace Christian in a series that began Dec. 16, 2017. Â The Gray Wolves won the initial meeting 78-44 and defeated the Tigers 87-64 on Oct. 30, 2018 to open last season. Â Both previous meetings have taken place in Wyoming, Mich. Â Lourdes and Olivet have split their two previous meetings 1-1 in a series that began Nov. 26, 2016. Â The Gray Wolves won the initial meeting 76-69 before falling to the Comets 70-54 in last year's contest on Nov. 15, 2018. Â Both previous meetings have been in Olivet, Mich. as this will be Olivet's first visit to Sylvania.
Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves opened the 2019-2020 regular season on Friday, falling 105-46 to Shawnee State. Â The Bears are ranked 11th in NAIA Division I. Â
Mare West came off the bench to lead Lourdes with nine points while
Sara Semler had eight points and four rebounds. Â
Erica Cary also pulled down four boards.
Scouting Grace Christian: The Tigers earned their first victory of the season on Saturday, defeating Trinity Christian 67-66. Â Emily Libey is leading three Grace Christian scorers in double figures through three games, averaging 12.0 points per game. Â Megan George has added 11.3 points per night while Bre Harris has chipped in 10.0 points per outing. Â On the glass, Ashley Hoek is the team's leading rebounder with 7.7 boards per night.
Scouting Olivet: The Comets finished 2018-2019 with an 8-17 record overall and a 4-12 mark in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Â Olivet returns seven players from last year's squad which finished eighth in the MIAA. Â Tammy Lee is the Comets' top returning scorer after averaging 7.3 points per night one year ago. Â Fayth Talbert added 6.0 points per game and pulled down 5.2 rebounds per contest, most among returnees. Â Olivet will be playing the contest at Lourdes as an exhibition game.
Earliest Start Ever: The season opener at Shawnee State on Oct. 25 marked the earliest women's basketball game ever played in Lourdes' program history. Â The Gray Wolves had previously played in October in seven of their eight seasons, but never prior to Oct. 27 (in both 2011 and 2012). Â This season marks just the second time in school history Lourdes will have played two games prior to November 1 (2011 being the other).
Lourdes in Home Openers: The Gray Wolves are 5-3 all-time in home openers. Â Lourdes is 2-1 in home openers played inside the Ebeid Rec Center after defeating Wright State Lake 101-47 to open the 2018-2019 home campaign.Â
Newcomers Start the Season Opener: Three of the five starters for the season opener at Shawnee State were newcomers for the Gray Wolves. Â
Erica Cary transferred to Lourdes prior to the season while freshmen
Baylee Baldwin and
Addie Conroy made their collegiate debuts in starting roles.
Spreading Around the Offense: While Lourdes did not have any double figure scorers in the season opener against Shawnee State, the Gray Wolves did get a lot of players involved in the scoring. Â Of the 15 players that saw action, 11 found the scorebook to combine for the 46 points. Â
Mare West scored a game-high nine points.
Semler Hands Out Assists: In addition to finishing the opener second on the squad in scoring with eight points,
Sara Semler led the Gray Wolves in assists. Â The junior had three of the team's seven total assists while committing just two turnovers on the night.
Lourdes Tabbed 8th in WHAC Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in eighth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Â Lourdes was picked just behind Concordia (Mich.) and just ahead of Northwestern Ohio in the balloting. Â Indiana Tech was picked as the unanimous preseason favorite.
Making Their Debuts: A total of 10 Gray Wolves made their debuts for Lourdes at Shawnee State. Â In addition to
Erica Cary and
Addie Conroy who drew starting assignments, transfers
Courteney Hardy and
Lauryn Gray made their first appearances wearing the terra cotta and block. Â Freshmen
Logan Ingram,
Abby House,
Leah Goodwin,
Mare West, and
Krisah Lewis made their collegiate debuts against the Bears as well.
This and That: Lourdes is 14-24 all-time inside the Ebeid Rec Center ... the Gray Wolves' first three games are all against non NAIA Division II opponents (NAIA Division I, NCAA Division III, and NCCAA).
