Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: The midway point of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference schedule has arrived, and Lourdes enters the second half of action with a one-half game lead in the league standings. Â The Gray Wolves travel to Lawrence Tech on Wednesday before hosting Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach Dennis Hopson: In his first season on the Lourdes bench,
Dennis Hopson is 14-4 (.778) with the Gray Wolves and as a men's collegiate head coach. Â He is only the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 10-5 series edge against Lawrence Tech dating back to Nov. 3, 2012. Â The two schools split a pair of meetings last season, with the Gray Wolves winning 89-67 in the Ebeid Rec Center and the Blue Devils posting an 86-72 win in Southfield, Mich. Â The series is even 3-3 all-time in Southfield. Â Indiana Tech is 13-7 all-time against Lourdes in a series that began Oct. 30, 2010. Â The Gray Wolves won the first meeting this year, 65-64, in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Nov. 16, snapping a nine-game losing streak to the Warriors. Â Indiana Tech is 3-0 against Lourdes in the Ebeid Rec Center and 6-2 all-time in Sylvania.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes won its 11th consecutive game last Wednesday with a 72-58 triumph over Northwestern Ohio at home. Â
Nick Welch led the Gray Wolves with 18 points and nine rebounds while
Kenny Coleman and
McRay White each tallied 11 points. Â
Clif Snow added 10 more, giving the Gray Wolves four players in double figures. Â Rochester (Mich.) snapped the Lourdes winning streak on Saturday, as the Warriors posted a 73-66 triumph in Rochester Hills, Mich. Â Snow paced the Gray Wolves with 20 points while Welch added 13 more. Â
Mike Bruce chipped in 12 points for Lourdes.
Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils have dropped four straight games after falling 87-86 at Siena Heights on Saturday. Â Jordan Henry leads Lawrence Tech averaging 15.6 points per game while Gunnar Gustafson adds 12.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. Â Carter Frantz (12.1 ppg) and Brandon Beavers (10.6 ppg) are both scoring in double figures as well for the Blue Devils.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors enter the week having won three straight games, and eight of their last nine overall, after downing Concordia (Mich.) 85-75 on Saturday. Â Indiana Tech hosts Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. Â Josh Kline leads the Warriors averaging 15.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Â Cory McKinney adds 10.9 points per night while Max Huber and Mitch Morken are scoring 10.5 and 10.2 points per game respectively.
70 is the Magic Number: When Lourdes has allowed less than 70 points in a game this season, the Gray Wolves are 13-0. Â However, when the opponents have topped the 70-point plateau, Lourdes is just 1-4, with the lone win coming in the season opener against Harris-Stowe.
Looking to Secure a Winning Season: Lourdes needs two wins to secure finishing the season .500 for the second consecutive year. Â The Gray Wolves last finished over .500 in consecutive years back in 2011-2012 through 2014-2015, Â a span of four consecutive seasons.
Welch Has Career Night: Nick Welch scored a career-high 18 points for the Gray Wolves last Wednesday in the win over Northwestern Ohio. Â The junior made 7-of-11 shots from the floor on his way to surpassing his previous collegiate high of 15 set as a sophomore at Spring Arbor against Cornerstone and matched earlier this year with the Gray Wolves versus Union (Ky.). Â Welch also grabbed nine rebounds, tied for his second highest output of the season.
Record-Setting Win Streak: Lourdes had its school-record 11-game winning streak snapped on Saturday at Rochester (Mich.). Â Prior to the streak, the Gray Wolves' previously long was eight consecutive games from Jan 23.-Feb. 13, 2013 in a season in which Lourdes won a school-record 22 games overall. Â
Crashing the Polls: Lourdes jumped into the NAIA Coaches' Top-25 Poll for the first time this season on Dec. 11, checking in at 14th in this week's ranking. Â The ranking is the highest ever for the Gray Wolves in men's basketball, surpassing the No. 18 ranking in the Dec. 3, 2013 poll. Â Lourdes is ranked for the first time since the Gray Wolves were 25th in the Dec. 10, 2013 poll. Â The next poll will be released this Wednesday, Jan. 15.
Playing Defense: Lourdes ranks third in the NAIA Division II in scoring defense, allowing just 65.2 points per game. Â The 73 points allowed at Rochester (Mich.) on Saturday marked the first time the Gray Wolves had surrendered more than 66 points in a game since yielding 72 to Madonna on Nov. 20. Â Lourdes is limiting opposing offenses to just 41.6% shooting from the floor, the 20th best mark in the nation.
More National Rankings: Lourdes has crashed the boards this year, holding a +8.1 rebounding margin, a mark that ranks 18th in the country. Â In addition, the Gray Wolves are shooting 47.9% from the floor, 26th best in NAIA Division II. Â Lourdes is +10.1 in scoring margin, 29th best nationally, while their 11.3 offensive boards is 39th in the country.
