Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: After splitting a pair of games during opening week, Lourdes looks to continue its strong start with a pair of games this week. The Gray Wolves travel to Ohio Christian on Tuesday evening before hosting Grace Christian on Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach John Kenger: In his third season on the Lourdes bench,
John Kenger sports an 23-39 (.371) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's collegiate head coach, Kenger has a 62-93 (.400) career mark. He is the fourth head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Ohio Christian has won both of the previous two meetings against Lourdes in a series that began Nov. 5, 2018. The Trailblazers won the inaugural meeting in Circleville, Ohio 72-71 before defeating the Gray Wolves 76-67 in overtime on Jan. 4, 2020 at the Ebeid Rec Center in the last meeting between the two schools. Lourdes holds a 2-1 series edge all-time against Grace Christian (which was known as Grace Bible during the first meeting) dating back to Dec. 16, 2017. Last season, the Tigers tallied a 70-65 win in Wyoming, Mich. on Oct. 29, 2019. This will be Grace Christian's first appearance ever inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves opened the season on Tuesday (Oct. 27) with a 71-65 win at home over Carlow.
Mary Liedel led Lourdes with 13 points while
Sara Semler added 12 more. Lourdes took to the road for the first time this year on Saturday (Oct. 31), falling 75-61. Liedel tallied 13 points and Semler added 12 more in the setback.
Scouting Ohio Christian: The Trailblazers have won both of their first two games this season after downing St. Mary-of-the-Woods 74-54 on Oct. 30. Rachel Gillum is averaging 20.5 points and 19.5 rebounds per game while shooting 78.9% from the floor. Helaina Limas adds 17.5 points per night while Nicole Cunningham is scoring 16.5 points per outing. Ohio Christian is outrebounding teams by nine boards per game and shooting 40.0% from the floor.
Scouting Grace Christian: The Tigers dropped their season opener at home to Grace 87-60 on Oct. 26. Bre VanVleet led Grace Christian with 14 points and nine rebounds while Bailey Fitzpatrick added 10 points. The Tigers play three times this week before heading to Lourdes. Grace Christian travels to Siena Heights on Monday, hosts Spring Arbor on Wednesday and entertains Welch on Friday.
Now That is Consistency: Mary Liedel and
Sara Semler both had identical point totals in their first two games. Liedel scored 13 points in each contest, making five field goals in each one, while Semler added 12 points in each game on four field goals. Semler was 8-for-9 from the floor on the week.
Freshmen Produce Results: Shae Pedroza and
Gabby Stover both played big roles in the first two games of the year. Pedroza tallied 10 points at Shawnee State while starting both contests. Stover pulled down six and seven rebounds against Carlow and Shawnee State respectively while adding eight points against the Bears on Saturday.
More Lourdes Debuts: Kynlee Edwards,
Rhegyn Blood, and
Nadeen Jemaa all made their Lourdes debuts in the season opener against Carlow in addition to
Shae Pedroza and
Gabby Stover.
Kailani Broyles and
Maddie Norton made their first appearance in a Gray Wolf uniform on Saturday against Shawnee State.
Bench Production: Lourdes scored nearly half of their points in the win over Carlow off the bench. The Gray Wolf reserves tallied 35 points in the win, led by 10 from
Sirena Pitts. Nearly one-third of the points at Shawnee State also came from the reserves as the bench tallied 20 of the 61 points.
Gabby Stover led the way off the bench with eight points.
Lourdes Tabbed 8th in WHAC Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in seventh place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just behind Rochester (Mich.) and just ahead of Northwestern Ohio in the balloting. Indiana Tech was picked as the preseason favorite.
A Different Look This Season: Due to COVID-19, Michigan-Dearborn has opted to not play basketball this winter. In addition, Aquinas will not start their season until January. The WHAC has scheduled just four dates for league play in December with the remainder taking place beginning Jan. 6.
More Changes in NAIA: This year the NAIA has combined Division I and Division II into just one division for basketball. A total of 64 schools will qualify for the NAIA National Championships with 16 teams hosting four-team regionals. The final 16 teams will then advance to Sioux City, Iowa.
Lots of New Faces: The Gray Wolves have eight players that have joined the roster this season, including six freshmen and two transfers. In addition,
Kaylesha Broyles,
Kailani Broyles,
Nadeen Jemaa and
Megan Harvey all sat out last season as redshirts and are set to make their first Lourdes appearance this year.
This and That: The Gray Wolves shot 42.9% from the floor but just 61.9% from the free throw line during the opening week ... of the 15 players that saw action in the opening week, all but
Kynlee Edwards found the scoring column but Edwards handed out two assists ... 10 different Lourdes players made a three-point field goal over the first two games of the year.
