Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes enters the final two weeks of the regular season in quest of its first WHAC title, tied for the top spot in the conference with four games to play. Â The 13th-ranked Gray Wolves travel to Cornerstone on Wednesday before hosting Rochester (Mich.) in the penultimate week of the regular season.
Head Coach Dennis Hopson: In his first season on the Lourdes bench,
Dennis Hopson is 19-7 (.731) with the Gray Wolves and as a men's collegiate head coach. Â He is only the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Cornerstone is 17-2 all-time against Lourdes in a series that began Dec. 10, 2011, but the Gray Wolves snapped a 15-game losing skid against the Golden Eagles earlier this season with a 71-59 victory in the Ebeid Rec Center on Nov. 26. Â Cornerstone is 9-1 against the Gray Wolves in Grand Rapids, Mich. Â Rochester (Mich.) holds a 7-1 series edge against Lourdes dating back to Jan. 22, 2011. Â The Warriors won the first meeting this season in Rochester Hills, Mich. 73-66 on Jan. 11. Â Lourdes is 0-2 against Rochester in the Ebeid Rec Center and 0-3 all-time at home against the Warriors.
Wrapping Up Last Week: In a game of runs, Michigan-Dearborn ultimately went on the last one last Wednesday as the Wolverines defeated Lourdes 86-78 in overtime at the Ebeid Re Center. Â
Deuce Martin led the Gray Wolves with 22 points, making 11-of-12 from the free throw line, while
McRay White added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles snapped their three-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon with an 81-67 victory over Rochester (Mich.) at home. Â Christian Rodriguez leads Cornerstone averaging 14.3 points per game while Tyler Baker has added 13.3 points per night. Â Cory Ainsworth is also averaging in double figures, tallying 10.7 points per outing along with 2.0 blocks per night. Â Kyle Hayes leads the team on the glass, grabbing 6.5 rebounds per game.
Scouting Rochester (Mich.): The Warriors enter the week having dropped two straight games following an 81-67 setback at Cornerstone on Saturday. Â Rochester hosts Madonna on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. Â Armand Cartwright leads Rochester in scoring, averaging 20.3 points per game while Cap Wilson adds 14.4 points per night. Â Peter Agba adds 12.8 points and a team-leading 8.1 rebounds per contest.
Looking to Host a Tournament Game: Lourdes has assured itself of a spot in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament while finishing the season over .500 for the second consecutive year. Â The Gray Wolves now have their sights set on hosting a quarterfinal game. Â Lourdes has only hosted one WHAC tournament game in program history, a quarterfinal game against Concordia (Mich.) in 2013. Â The 19 victories this season are second most in program history and the Gray Wolves need three more triumphs to match the 2012-2013 school record of 22 victories.
Getting Defensive: Lourdes ranks third in the NAIA Division II in scoring defense, allowing just 67.1 points per game. Â The Gray Wolves are limiting opposing offenses to just 41.2% shooting from the floor, the 15th best mark in the nation. Â The defense has led to win, as Lourdes is 16-0 this season when the Gray Wolves have allowed less than 70 points in a game.
Martin Has Career Game: Deuce Martin scored a career-high 22 points last Wednesday against Michigan-Dearborn. Â The junior's previous high was 18 last season against Concordia (Mich.). Â Martin came off the bench and made 11-of-12 free throws while tallying the 22 points in 29 minutes of action.
Bonus Basketball: Prior to last season, Lourdes had played 10 overtime games in the program's first eight seasons. Â Last year the Gray Wolves played beyond 40 minutes a school-record five times. Â After last week's overtime game against Michigan-Dearborn, Lourdes has played extra basketball four times this season, posting a 2-2 record.
A Tale of Two Halves: Lourdes is outscoring opponents by just 32 points, 849-817 in the first half this season. Â However, the Gray Wolves hold a 168-point edge, 1,039-871, in the second half.
Among the National Leaders: Lourdes ranks 26th in NAIA Division II with a +5.7 rebounding margin this season. Â The Gray Wolves are also 37th outscoring their opponents by 7.5 points per game. In addition, Lourdes ranks 40th in offensive rebounds per night with 11.2, and is 46th in turnover margin at +1.0.Â
Remaining 13th Nationally: Lourdes jumped into the NAIA Coaches' Top-25 Poll for the first time this season on Dec. 11. Â Lourdes moved up one spot to 13th, its highest ranking in program history, in the poll released on Jan. 15, and remained 13th in the most recent poll that was released on Feb. 5.
Team Captains: Lourdes has four captains this season. Â
