Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: With two weeks remaining in the regular season, Lourdes remains locked in a battle for its first WHAC bid in program history. Â The Gray Wolves continue that quest this week heading to Cornerstone on Wednesday evening before hosting Rochester (Mich.) on Saturday to begin the final homestand of the year.
Head Coach John Kenger: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
John Kenger sports an 20-35 (.364) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. Â In his fifth season overall as a women's collegiate head coach, Kenger has a 59-89 (.399) career mark. Â He is the fourth head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Cornerstone holds a 13-4 series advantage against Lourdes dating back to Dec. 10, 2011, but the Gray Wolves have won the last three meetings between the two schools. Â Lourdes was an 80-65 victor over the Golden Eagles in the Ebeid Rec Center on Nov. 26 in the first meeting of the season. Â Cornerstone is 7-1 all-time against the Gray Wolves in Grand Rapids, Mich. Â Rochester (Mich.) holds a 7-1 series advantage against Lourdes and has won the last five meetings. Â The Warriors posted a 77-68 victory over the Gray Wolves in Rochester Hills, Mich. earlier this season on Jan. 11. Â Lourdes is 0-2 against Rochester in the Ebeid Rec Center and 1-3 all-time at home.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes was within four of Michigan-Dearborn entering the fourth quarter on Wednesday, but the Wolverines pulled away for a 62-53 victory over the Gray Wolves. Â
Hunter Kershaw led Lourdes with 10 points in the loss. Â On Saturday, the Gray Wolves closed out non-conference play with an 80-42 victory at home against Great Lakes Christian.
Baylee Baldwin led Lourdes with 13 points while Kershaw and
Mary Liedel added 12 points each.
Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Golden Eagles have dropped seven consecutive games after falling at home to Rochester (Mich.) 80-75 on Saturday afternoon. Â Shelby Nyboer leads Cornerstone averaging 12.0 points per game while Rebekah Crosby adds 11.0 points and a team-leading 7.6 rebounds per contest. Â
Scouting Rochester (Mich.): The Warriors enter the week having won two of their last three games after defeating Cornerstone 80-75 on Saturday. Â Rochester hosts Madonna on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. Â Lexey Tobel leads the Warriors averaging 16.1 points per outing while Devan Valko adds 13.5 points per night. Â Delaney Bolles is also scoring in double figures, tallying 10.0 points per contest while also grabbing a team-leading 6.6 rebounds per night.
Crashing the Boards: Lourdes was constantly on the glass Saturday against Great Lakes Christian, pulling down 71 total rebounds. Â The Gray Wolves grabbed 32 rebounds on the offensive end of the floor, turning them into 31 second chance points.
Best Stretch in Program History: Lourdes is in the midst of its best seven-game stretch in program history. Â The Gray Wolves have won five of the last seven games overall dating back to Jan. 22. Â Amongst the stretch is the longest winning streak in program history, four consecutive games, from Jan. 22-30.
Making Shots Equals Success: The Gray Wolves' success this season has gone hand-in-hand with making shots. Â When Lourdes is shooting a better percentage from the floor than their opponents this year, the Gray Wolves are 9-1. Â However, Lourdes has yet to win a game when shooting a lower percentage than the opposition.
Solid Third Quarters: Lourdes came out of halftime with a pair of strong defensive efforts last week. Â The Gray Wolves limited Michigan-Dearborn to just six points in the third quarter on Wednesday before bettering that on Saturday, limiting Great Lakes Christian to only four points in the third period. Â Lourdes best quarter of the season came at Akron Wayne, limiting the Warriors to two points in the third stanza.
Home Success: Lourdes has won a program-best six home games this season inside the Ebeid Rec Center. Â With a victory in one of its final two home games (Rochester or Lawrence Tech), the Gray Wolves would finish with a .500 record on its home floor for the first time in program history.
Limiting Scoring: Lourdes now ranks 42nd among all NAIA Division II teams in scoring defense, allowing just 64.3 points per game this season. Â The Gray Wolves have allowed more than 66 points just once in their last eight games.
Battling for a Tournament Berth: As Lourdes heads into the final two weeks of the WHAC schedule, the Gray Wolves are batting for their first WHAC tournament berth in program history. Â Currently Lourdes is tied with Northwestern Ohio for the final postseason spot. Â Lourdes downed Northwestern Ohio in their first head-to-head meeting of the year and the two schools meet in the regular season finale on Feb. 22 in Lima, Ohio.
This and That: Mirandia Green and
Sara Semler are the only two Gray Wolves to have started all 26 games this season ...
Baylee Baldwin is the only other Lourdes player to appear in all 26 contests ... the Gray Wolves rank 45th in NAIA Division II having made 180 three-point field goals this season.
