Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: For the first time in program history, Lourdes is playing past the end of the regular season, as the Gray Wolves venture into the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament. Â The eighth-seeded Gray Wolves travel to top-seeded Indiana Tech on Thursday evening for the quarterfinal round.
Head Coach John Kenger: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
John Kenger sports an 22-37 (.373) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. Â In his fifth season overall as a women's collegiate head coach, Kenger has a 61-91 (.401) career mark. Â He is the fourth head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Indiana Tech holds a 17-1 advantage all-time against the Gray Wolves in a series that dates back to Jan. 7, 2012. Â The Warriors have won 14 straight in the series after sweeping the regular season meetings this year. Â Indiana Tech was a 74-51 victor in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Nov. 16 and a 66-56 winner in the Ebeid Rec Center on Jan. 18. Â The Warriors are 8-1 against Lourdes all-time in Fort Wayne.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lawrence Tech raced out to a 16-point halftime lead and spoiled Senior Night for Lourdes last Wednesday, defeating the Gray Wolves 77-51. Â
Mirandia Green paced the Gray Wolves with 12 points while
Hunter Kershaw added 11 more. Â On Saturday, Lourdes closed the regular season with a 58-51 victory at Northwestern Ohio to clinch the final WHAC tournament berth. Â
Baylee Baldwin scored 14 points while
Sirena Pitts and
Erica Cary came off the bench to add 13 and 10 points respectively.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors enter the postseason having won 15 consecutive games on their way to the WHAC regular season title. Â Indiana Tech defeated Aquinas at home 67-49 on Saturday to close out the regular season. Â DeAnn Kauffman leads Indiana Tech averaging 15.8 points per game while Emma Wolfe adds 13.3 points per night. Â Kyra Whitaker and Alexis Hill give the Warriors four double figure scorers, as they are tallying 11.8 and 11.3 points per game respectively. Â Hill also leads Indiana Tech in rebounding, grabbing 7.3 boards per night.
Lourdes in the WHAC: Lourdes has qualified for its first WHAC tournament in program history in its ninth season as a program. Â The Gray Wolves set a new program record for conference victories in a season this year with seven. Â Lourdes did finish in a tie for seventh place in the standings one season ago, but lost out on qualifying for the postseason tournament in a three-way tie-breaker.
Matching a School Record: Lourdes set a new school record for victories in a season with their 11th win of the year on Saturday at Northwestern Ohio. Â The Gray Wolves set the record with 11 wins in 2018-2019, in Coach
John Kenger's first season at the helm of the program, matching it this year.
2020 Has Been Good to Lourdes: The Gray Wolves flipped the calendar from 2019 to 2020 with a 3-11 record, but since celebrating the new year Lourdes has had a great deal of success. Â The Gray Wolves are 8-8 during the calendar year, setting the school record with a four-game winning streak in the process.
60 is the Magic Number: Lourdes has posted a 10-1 record this season when holding opponents to less than 60 points this season. Â Conversely, when the Gray Wolves have allowed their opponents to score more than 70 points, they have yet to win, suffering 15 setbacks in 15 such games.
A Little of Everything: Sara Semler filled the stat sheet on Saturday in the season finale at Northwestern Ohio. Â In addition to playing 40 minutes for the fifth time this season, Semler scored eight points, led the team with nine rebounds, and handed out a team-high six assists while committing just one turnover. Â She made both of her three-point attempts and added two steals to her resume as well.
Making Free Throws: Lourdes has three players shooting better than 80% from the free throw line this season. Â
Baylee Baldwin is connecting at an 83.3% (20-of-24) clip while
Mary Liedel is a 82.1% (32-of-39) shooter. Â
Sara Semler has made 57-of-70 from the charity stripe for an 81.9% clip.
Balancing the Scoring: Lourdes does not have a single player averaging in double figures in scoring this season, with
Mary Liedel leading the way tallying 9.0 points per game. Â However, 11 different Gray Wolves have led the team in scoring in various games this year.
Among the Nation's Leaders: Lourdes ranks 44th among all NAIA Division II teams in scoring defense, allowing just 64.6 points per game this season. The Gray Wolves also rank 47th in the country having made 208 three-point field goals this season.Â
