Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes had added a non-conference game to its slate on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Point Park to conclude a three-game homestand. The Gray Wolves will then take to the road for the first time since October on Saturday afternoon, heading to Northwestern Ohio to conclude the season series with the Racers.
Head Coach Dennis Hopson: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
Dennis Hopson is 22-13 (.629) with the Gray Wolves and as a men's collegiate head coach. He is only the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 3-0 all-time against Point Park in a series that began Nov. 11, 2011. The two schools have not met since Dec. 11, 2013, a game won by the Gray Wolves in overtime, 92-88. The Pioneers have never been to Sylvania, Ohio, with the lone Lourdes home game taking place at Adrian College back in 2013. Lourdes holds a 12-10 series edge against Northwestern Ohio dating back to Dec. 30, 2010. The Gray Wolves won this year's first meeting 75-65 inside the Ebeid Rec Center this past Saturday after the two schools split a pair of meetings last season. The Gray Wolves won 72-58 inside the Ebeid Rec Center with the Racers winning 83-75 in Lima, Ohio. Northwestern Ohio holds a 7-4 series edge in games played in Lima.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Five Gray Wolves tallied double figures last Wednesday (Jan. 13) as Lourdes defeated East-West 92-77 after a 10-week layoff.
Nick Welch posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds while
Julian Egbo notched one of his own with 13 points and 10 boards.
Little Anderson also scored 18 points in the win. Lourdes opened WHAC play on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 16) with a 75-65 victory over Northwestern Ohio. Welch led the Gray Wolves with 18 points and eight boards while
Clif Snow chipped in 14 points.
Khaire Williams tallied 13 points.
Scouting Point Park: The Pioneers have won two straight after downing Carlow 101-76 on Saturday (Jan. 13) at home. Sherron Schifino leads Point Park averaging 12.5 points per game while Garret McHenry chips in 10.7 points per night. Tony James adds 10.5 points and a team-leading 7.3 rebounds for the Pioneers.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers remain winless this season after falling to Lourdes 75-65 last Saturday. Northwestern Ohio travels to Rio Grande on Tuesday before hosting Lourdes. Nathan Lessing leads the Racers averaging 18.7 points per game while Isaac Golson Jr. tallies 13 points per night. Hunter Bode adds 13.0 points and a team-leading 7.3 rebounds per outing for the Racers.
Welch Earns WHAC Honors: Nick Welch was named the WHAC Player of the Week for the first time in his career after averaging 18.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game last week. The senior shot 48.3% from the floor, including 42.9% from three-point range while scoring 18 points in each of the wins.
Double Trouble: Nick Welch and
Julian Egbo both registered double-doubles in the win over East-West. Welch's 18-point, 11-rebound effort was his second double-double of the year, and fourth of his career. Egbo tallied 13 points and 10 boards for his sixth career double-double.
Taking Care of the Basketball: Lourdes committed just four turnovers on Saturday in the win over Northwestern Ohio, matching the team's low from last season in a game against Indiana Tech. The Gray Wolves are averaging just 10.0 miscues per game this year and have had fewer turnovers than their opponent in each game this season. Lourdes is +5.8 in turnover margin this season, ranking 11th in NAIA.
Nearing the School's Scoring Mark: Clif Snow enters the week just 44 points shy of matching
Zach Steinmetz's (2013-2016) school scoring mark. Snow has scored 1,351 points during his four years at Lourdes while Steinmetz finished his career with 1,395 points in three seasons.
Welcome Back Brett: Brett Lauf made his first appearance in a Lourdes uniform since Feb. 21, 2019 last week after missing more than 22 months due to a knee injury. Lauf averaged 4.5 points per game in the two contests while dishing out six total assists.
Lourdes Tabbed Third in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in third place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Madonna and just behind Cornerstone in the league balloting. Indiana Tech is the favorite to win the WHAC in 2020-2021.
Try Two of WHAC Play: Due to COVID-19, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has pushed the start of league play into January. The conference produced a new schedule, with each team scheduled to play 13 games for the 2020-2021 league slate. Michigan-Dearborn is not playing basketball this year. League play is slated to begin January 27, but Lourdes, Northwestern Ohio, and Indiana Tech have pushed games up and will begin this week.
More Changes in NAIA: This year the NAIA has combined Division I and Division II into just one division for basketball. A total of 48 schools will qualify for the NAIA National Championships with 16 teams hosting three-team regionals. The final 16 teams will then advance to Kansas City, Mo.
This and That: Charles Swain saw his first action of the season last week, starting both contests ...
Khaire Williams scored a career-high 13 points in the win against Northwestern Ohio ... Lourdes improved to 10-1 all-time in home openers with the victory over East-West ... the Gray Wolves rank 12th in NAIA grabbing 15.5 offensive boards per contest.
