Gray Wolves Head to Northwestern Ohio Saturday Afternoon

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes will conclude its season series with Northwestern Ohio on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel down I-75 to face the Racers in Lima, Ohio.  Lourdes looking for revenge after falling to UNOH in the Ebeid Rec Center last Saturday.

Head Coach John Kenger: In his third season on the Lourdes bench, John Kenger sports an 23-42 (.354) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves.  In his sixth season overall as a women's collegiate head coach, Kenger has a 62-96 (.394) career mark.  He is the fourth head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Northwestern Ohio holds a 13-6 series edge against the Gray Wolves in a series that began Jan. 18, 2012.  The Racers snapped Lourdes three-game winning streak in the series with a 61-53 victory in the Ebeid Rec Center last Saturday (Jan. 16).  Northwestern Ohio holds a 6-3 series edge in Lima, Ohio but the Gray Wolves have won two of the last three meetings on the Racers' home court.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes returned from a 10-week layoff dropping a narrow 66-63 decision to Taylor on Jan. 13.  Mary Liedel led the Gray Wolves with 22 points and eight rebounds while Shae Pedroza added 12 points.  Lourdes opened WHAC play on Jan. 16 suffering a 61-53 setback at home against Northwestern Ohio.  Erica Cary led Lourdes off the bench with nine points.

Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers enter the weekend having won two straight games following a 71-56 victory at home against Ohio Christian on Wednesday night.  Jaida Haines leads Northwestern Ohio averaging 17.8 points per game while Erin Scott adds 14.2 points per contest.  Tya Bell has contributed 11.6 points per game while Kalea Kruser has tallied a team-leading 7.0 rebounds per night.

Liedel Tallies Career High: Mary Liedel scored a career-high 22 points last Wednesday against Taylor, the most by a Gray Wolf this season.  Her previous career high was 15 last season against Ohio Christian and Siena Heights.  Liedel's total was the most by a Lourdes player since Sara Semler scored 25 at Rochester (Mich.) on Jan. 11, 2020.

Freshmen Shine Early: Through the first five games of the season, a pair of freshmen are tied for second on the team in scoring for the Gray Wolves.  Shae Pedroza and Gabby Stover are both averaging 8.4 points per contests during their rookie year.  Pedroza tallied a season-high 12 points against Taylor one game after Pedroza poured in 21 at Ohio Christian.

Dialing Long Distance: Lourdes ranks 19th in the NAIA averaging 8.6 three-point field goals per game this season.  The Gray Wolves have connected for at least six in each contest and made a season-high 11 against Taylor last Wednesday afternoon.  Lourdes is shooting 33.1% from beyond the arc on the year.

Goodwin Makes First Appearances: Leah Goodwin made her first two appearances of the 2020-2021 season last week.  The sophomore scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds, including four on the offensive end of the floor, against Northwestern Ohio.

Jeckyl and Hyde: Lourdes has gotten off to slow starts in both halves this season but have played well in the second and fourth quarters.  The Gray Wolves are outscoring the opposition both the second and fourth stanzas but have been outscored in the first and third periods.

Handing Out Assists: Sara Semler ranks in the top-50 in the NAIA averaging 4.4 assists per game this season.  The senior enters the weekend with 196 career assists, four shy of 200 for her career.

Lourdes Tabbed 8th in WHAC Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in seventh place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  Lourdes was picked just behind Rochester (Mich.) and just ahead of Northwestern Ohio in the balloting.  Indiana Tech was picked as the preseason favorite.

Try Two of WHAC Play: Due to COVID-19, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has pushed the start of league play into January.  The conference produced a new schedule, with each team scheduled to play 13 games for the 2020-2021 league slate.  Michigan-Dearborn is not playing basketball this year.  League play is slated to begin January 27, but Lourdes, Northwestern Ohio, and Indiana Tech have pushed games up and will begin this week.

More Changes in NAIA: This year the NAIA has combined Division I and Division II into just one division for basketball.  A total of 64 schools will qualify for the NAIA National Championships with 16 teams hosting four-team regionals.  The final 16 teams will then advance to Sioux City, Iowa.

This and That: Lourdes is averaging 13.8 offensive rebounds per game this season, a mark that ranks in the top-50 nationally ... Sara Semler has registered five of the team's 15 blocked shots thus far ... Kailani Broyles made her first two career starts last week ... Semler is shooting a team-leading 52.2% from the floor ... Lourdes will play four of its next five game at home following Saturday.
