Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes continues Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play with a pair of home games this week, continuing a stretch in which the Gray Wolves are playing seven of nine games inside the Ebeid Rec Center. Lourdes hosts Indiana Tech on Wednesday night before hosting Concordia (Mich.) on Sunday afternoon.
Head Coach Dennis Hopson: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
Dennis Hopson is 24-13 (.649) with the Gray Wolves and as a men's collegiate head coach. He is only the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Indiana Tech holds a 13-8 series advantage over Lourdes dating back to Oct. 30, 2010, but the Gray Wolves swept last season's series. The Gray Wolves won 65-64 in Fort Wayne, Ind. and 73-72 inside the Ebeid Rec Center. The Warriors are 3-1 against Lourdes inside the Ebeid Rec Center. Lourdes is 12-9 all-time against Concordia (Mich.) in a series that began Nov. 2, 2010. The Gray Wolves have won three straight in the season after a 78-65 win in the Ebeid Rec Center and a 74-60 victory in Ann Arbor, Mich. last season. The Gray Wolves are 3-1 against the Cardinals in the Ebeid Rec Center.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes added a non-conference game against Point Park last Wednesday (Jan. 20) and jumped out to a 13-point halftime lead on the way to a 72-55 victory over the Pioneers.
Mike Bruce tallied 18 points and
Julian Egbo added 16 more for the Gray Wolves in the win. On Saturday (Jan. 23), Lourdes completed the regular season sweep of Northwestern Ohio with a 77-57 triumph over the Racers in Lima, Ohio.
Khaire Williams tallied a team-high 14 points while
Charles Swain added 10 more.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors enter the game having won four straight games following a 66-52 non-conference triumph over Lincoln on Thursday (Jan. 21) evening. Rog Stein leads four Indiana Tech players in double figures, averaging 15.1 points per night while also grabbing a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game. Josh Kline adds 14.4 points per outing while Grant Smith tallies 13.8 points per night. Cory McKinney adds 11.3 points per game for the Warriors.
Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals enter the week having won two straight after defeating Spring Arbor 73-55 on Monday (Jan. 25) evening. Concordia travels to Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday and hosts Siena Heights on Saturday before visiting Lourdes. Thomas Hronis leads Concordia averaging 21.6 points per game while Evan Neff adds 14.0 points per night. Zackary Johnson has chipped in 12.4 points per outing.
Williams and Swain Register Career Highs: Khaire Williams and
Charles Swain led the Gray Wolves in scoring on Saturday at Northwestern Ohio with career highs for both players. Williams tallied 14 points, one more than his previous best set earlier this season in the first meeting with the Racers. Swain added 10 points for his first collegiate double figure scoring night.
Double Trouble: Nick Welch and
Clif Snow both registered double-doubles in the win over Point Park. Welch's 13-point, 11-rebound effort was his third consecutive double-double and fifth of his career. His streak ended against Northwestern Ohio on Saturday. Snow tallied 11 points and 15 boards for his 14th career double-double and first of 2020-2021.
Nearing the School's Scoring Mark: Clif Snow enters the week just 25 points shy of matching
Zach Steinmetz's (2013-2016) school scoring mark. Snow has scored 1,370 points during his four years at Lourdes while Steinmetz finished his career with 1,395 points in three seasons.
Crashing the Offensive Glass: Lourdes ranks 10th among all NAIA schools averaging 14.3 offensive rebounds per game. Individually,
Nick Welch is 11th on the offensive glass, grabbing 3.83 offensive rebounds per outing. Lourdes has turned its 86 offensive rebounds this year into 93 second chance points.
Making Free Throws: Lourdes is shooting 72.2% from the free throw line this season after making 13-of-14 (92.9%) at Northwestern Ohio on Saturday.
Julian Egbo leads the Gray Wolves, connecting at an 84.2% (16-of-19) clip.
Charles Swain is a perfect 8-for-8 from the line as well.
Lourdes Tabbed Third in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in third place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Madonna and just behind Cornerstone in the league balloting. Indiana Tech is the favorite to win the WHAC in 2020-2021.
More Changes in NAIA: This year the NAIA has combined Division I and Division II into just one division for basketball. A total of 48 schools will qualify for the NAIA National Championships with 16 teams hosting three-team regionals. The final 16 teams will then advance to Kansas City, Mo.
This and That: Lourdes is 21st nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.3 ...
Nick Welch is 27th individually with a 3.4 assist-to-turnover ratio, having handed out 17 assists and committing just five turnovers ... the Gray Wolves are averaging just 10.8 turnovers per night.
