Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season begins in full force this week as the entire league returns to action. Lourdes hosts 12th-ranked Indiana Tech on Wednesday evening before entertaining Concordia (Mich.) on Sunday afternoon.
Head Coach John Kenger: In his third season on the Lourdes bench,
John Kenger sports an 24-42 (.364) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's collegiate head coach, Kenger has a 63-96 (.396) career mark. He is the fourth head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Indiana Tech leads the all-time series against Lourdes 18-1 dating back to Jan. 7, 2012. The Warriors have won 15 straight meetings between the two schools, including all three last season. Last year, Indiana Tech was a 74-51 winner in Fort Wayne, Ind. and a 66-56 victor in the Ebeid Rec Center during the regular season. The two teams met in the WHAC tournament quarterfinals with the Warriors scoring a 74-41 victory. Indiana Tech is 4-0 all-time against Lourdes in the Ebeid Rec Center. Concordia (Mich.) holds a 16-2 series edge against the Gray Wolves dating back to Oct. 27, 2011. The Cardinals have won three straight meetings between the two sides after sweeping last season's meetings, winning 73-42 in Ann Arbor, Mich. and 74-54 at the Ebeid Rec Center. Concordia is 4-0 against Lourdes all-time in the Ebeid Rec Center.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Despite trailing by 10 late in the first quarter, Lourdes used a 21-1 run to open the second half to defeat Northwestern Ohio 68-56 on Saturday (Jan. 23) in Lima, Ohio.
Shae Pedroza led four Gray Wolves in double figures with 16 points while
Kailani Broyles,
Mary Liedel, and
Gabby Stover added 12 points each.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors have won three straight games after a 101-62 victory at home against Cornerstone last Thursday (Jan. 21). Kyra Whitaker leads Indiana Tech averaging 15.5 points per game while Erika Foy adds 14.1 points per night. Alexis Hill tallies 12.9 points and a team-leading 7.3 rebounds per game for the Warriors. Indiana Tech is allowing just 54.5 points per game defensively.
Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals have won two straight games after defeating West Virginia Tech 87-77 on Saturday (Jan. 23). Katie Snow is the lone Cardinal to average double figures, scoring 15.3 points per game. J'may Simmons adds 9.9 points per night. Concordia will travel to Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday and host Siena Heights on Saturday before visiting Lourdes.
Freshman Having Quite the Start: Shae Pedroza has made the most of her rookie season thus far. The freshman guard ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 9.7 points per game over her first six contests. Pedroza notched her third double figure scoring game of the year on Saturday at Northwestern Ohio, pouring in a career-high 16 points.
Semler Passes 200 Assist Mark: Sara Semler dished out seven assists last Saturday at Northwestern Ohio, giving the senior 203 for her four-year career with the Gray Wolves. Her 4.83 helpers per night this season rank 32nd in the NAIA. Semler also ranks 20th in the country with a 2.90 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Sharing the Scoring: For the first time this season, Lourdes had four players tally double figures in the scoring column in the Gray Wolves' victory at Northwestern Ohio. In addition to
Shae Pedroza's team-high 16 points,
Kailani Broyles,
Mary Liedel, and
Gabby Stover each added 12 points. For Broyles, the effort represented her first double figure game at Lourdes.
Turning Miscues into Points: Lourdes force Northwestern Ohio into 24 turnovers last Saturday and made the most of its opportunities. The Gray Wolves converted the Racer miscues into 24 points on the offensive end.
Slow Starts: Outside of the opening game of the season against Carlow, Lourdes has trailed after the opening period in each contest this year. The Gray Wolves have been outscored 116-78 over the first 10 minutes, but have outscored their opponents by 26 points the remainder of the game.
Facing Ranked Opponents: Indiana Tech is the second ranked foe the Gray Wolves have faced this year, having already dropped a game (75-61) at eighth-ranked Shawnee State on Oct. 31. This will be the 50th ranked foe Lourdes has played all-time, with just one win against the NAIA top-25, at 79-75 triumph over 18th-ranked Indiana-Northwest on Nov. 5, 2011.
Lourdes Tabbed 8th in WHAC Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in seventh place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just behind Rochester (Mich.) and just ahead of Northwestern Ohio in the balloting. Indiana Tech was picked as the preseason favorite.
More Changes in NAIA: This year the NAIA has combined Division I and Division II into just one division for basketball. A total of 48 schools will qualify for the NAIA National Championships with 16 teams hosting four-team regionals. The final 16 teams will then advance to Sioux City, Iowa.
This and That: Lourdes is averaging 8.5 three-pointers this season, 21st most in the NAIA ... the Gray Wolves also rank 47th nationally grabbing 14.0 offensive boards per night ...
Gabby Stover is pulling down 3.0 offensive boards per game individually.
