Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: The second half of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference slate begins this week for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves play three times. Lourdes heads to Madonna on Wednesday and Siena Heights on Saturday before closing the home portion of the schedule Sunday afternoon entertaining Siena Heights.
Head Coach John Kenger: In his third season on the Lourdes bench,
John Kenger sports an 25-45 (.357) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his sixth season overall as a women's collegiate head coach, Kenger has a 64-99 (.393) career mark. He is the fourth head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Madonna holds a 12-6 series edge against Lourdes dating back to Jan. 11, 2012 but the Gray Wolves have won the last five meetings between the two schools. Lourdes was a 67-59 victor at home last season and a 46-42 winner in Livonia, Mich. The Crusaders are 7-2 against Lourdes in Livonia. Aquinas holds a 17-1 edge in the series against Lourdes going back to Nov. 30, 2011. The Saints won the first meeting last year 43-40 in Grand Rapids, Mich. before the Gray Wolves broke through at home with a 48-46 triumph. Aquinas is 9-0 against Lourdes in Grand Rapids. Siena Heights is 19-0 all-time against Lourdes dating back to Dec. 3, 2011. The Saints won the first meeting this year 90-65 on Feb. 3 in Adrian, Mich. Siena Heights is 4-0 against the Gray Wolves in the Ebeid Rec Center.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Siena Heights shot better than 50% from the floor, and was 11-of-19 from three-point range in a 90-65 victory over the Gray Wolves last Wednesday (Feb. 3).
Gabby Stover led Lourdes with 15 points. On Saturday, Lourdes led nearly wire-to-wire in a 78-62 triumph at home against Lawrence Tech.
Kailani Broyles tallied 20 points in the victory. Rochester (Mich.) posted a 63-50 win over the Gray Wolves on Saturday.
Mary Liedel poured in a team-high 19 points for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders fell 76-57 to Concordia (Mich.) on Sunday after winning two of their previous three games. Megan Aho leads Madonna averaging 13.1 points while grabbing 6.8 rebounds per contest. Bree McCormick has added 10.0 points per outing this year. Emily Pendred has pulled down a team-high 7.1 rebounds per game this year for the Crusaders.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints enter the week having fallen 58-55 to Indiana Tech on Monday night and will host Siena Heights on Wednesday before entertaining Lourdes. Marissa Brady is scoring 17.3 points and grabbing 15.3 rebounds per game for Aquinas this year. Brighton Miller has added 10.0 points per contest.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints had their two-game winning streak snapped on Sunday with a 66-57 setback at home against Lawrence Tech. Siena Heights heads to Aquinas on Wednesday, Concordia (Mich.) on Thursday, and hosts Rochester (Mich.) on Saturday before visiting Lourdes. Peyton Banks leads the Saints averaging 19.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while Kelsey Wyman adds 16.7 points per outing. Allye Minor is also tallying double figures, scoring 12.6 points per game.
Semler Nearing Assist Record: Sara Semler enters Wednesday's game at Madonna just one assist behind Christiana Jefferson (2017-2019) as the school's career assist leader. Semler has 212 assists during her time at Lourdes.
On the Steals Chart: Sara Semler also ranks fourth all-time for the Gray Wolves with 111 career steals.
Jesse Fidler (2014-2017) is the school record-holder with 156 thefts.
Broyles Tallies Career High: Kailani Broyles scored a career-high 20 points for the Gray Wolves in their win against Lawrence Tech. The redshirt-junior has tallied four straight double figure scoring games, but sat out the Rochester (Mich.) game due to injury.
Taking Care of the Basketball: Sara Semler leads Lourdes with 38 assists this season. She has protected the basketball with just 12 turnovers, and ranks 10th in the NAIA with a 3.17 assist-to-turnover ratio this season.
Lourdes Tabbed 8th in WHAC Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in seventh place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just behind Rochester (Mich.) and just ahead of Northwestern Ohio in the balloting. Indiana Tech was picked as the preseason favorite.
More Changes in NAIA: This year the NAIA has combined Division I and Division II into just one division for basketball. A total of 48 schools will qualify for the NAIA National Championships with 16 teams hosting four-team regionals. The final 16 teams will then advance to Sioux City, Iowa.
This and That: Lourdes is averaging 7.6 three-pointers this season, 45th most in the NAIA ...
Gabby Stover had her first collegiate double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds against Siena Heights in their first meeting.
