Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: The Gray Wolves take their school-record 13-game win streak to Lima, Ohio on Wednesday evening as Lourdes battles Northwestern Ohio. On Saturday, the Gray Wolves return to the Ebeid Rec Center to battle Madonna, beginning a two-game homestand.
Head Coach Dennis Hopson: In his second season on the Lourdes bench,
Dennis Hopson is 47-20 (.701) with the Gray Wolves and as a men's collegiate head coach. He is only the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 14-10 all-time against Northwestern Ohio dating back to Dec. 30, 2010. The Gray Wolves have won three straight meetings between the two schools after downing the Racers 94-69 on Nov. 23 inside the Ebeid Rec Center. Northwestern Ohio holds a 7-5 edge all-time in games played in Lima, Ohio. Madonna leads the all-time series against Lourdes 15-9 dating back to Nov. 6, 2010. The Crusaders have won the last two meetings between the two schools after downing Lourdes 86-78 on Nov. 20 in Livonia, Mich. Madonna is 4-0 all-time against the Gray Wolves inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes broke open a three-point halftime lead in the second half and defeated Aquinas 76-61 on Wednesday (Jan. 19) evening.
Joey Holifield led Lourdes with 23 points while
McRay White and
Nick Welch tallied 16 points each. On Saturday (Jan. 22), the Gray Wolves limited Lawrence Tech to just 30.9% shooting from the floor in a 68-41 victory.
Little Anderson scored a game-high 18 points while White added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Monday evening (Jan. 24), Holifield scored a lay-in with less than 10 seconds to play to give Lourdes a 65-64 victory at Rochester (Mich.). Anderson scored 17 points while Holifield added 15 more in the victory.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers had their two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 22), dropping a 71-56 decision at Aquinas. Biggz Johnson leads Northwestern Ohio in scoring this season, averaging 14.3 points per game while Ben Westrick adds 10.5 points per night. Westrick is also pulling down a team-high 6.4 rebounds per contest.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders enter the week having won three straight games following an 80-73 victory at Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday (Jan. 22). Madonna hosts Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday before heading to Lourdes. Mark Mettie is averaging a team-leading 17.5 points per game while Noah Campbell adds 11.0 points per night. Ethan Emerzian is also scoring in double figures, posting 10.1 points per game. Brendan Young leads Madonna in rebounding at 7.4 boards per contest.
Record-Breaking Streak: Lourdes current 13-game winning streak is the longest streak in program history. The Gray Wolves have surpassed the old mark, an 11-game winning streak which took place from Nov. 23, 2019-Jan. 8, 2020. Lourdes has not dropped a game since Dec. 1, 2021, a six-point setback at Lawrence Tech.
Inside the Streak: Lourdes won 11 of the first 12 games of its current winning streak by double figures. Rochester (Mich.) is the only team to play the Gray Wolves closer than 10, falling by eight in the Ebeid Rec Center on Jan. 15 and by one in Rochester Hills, Mich. on Monday (Jan. 24).
Home Sweet Home: Lourdes enters Saturday's game against Madonna a perfect 11-0 inside the Ebeid Rec Center this season. In fact, the Gray Wolves have won 18 consecutive games at home after going 7-0 last season as well. The Gray Wolves' last home loss came against Cornerstone on Feb. 26, 2020 in the WHAC quarterfinals.
Taking Care of the Basketball: Lourdes enters the week with a 1.3 assist-to-turnover ratio this season.
Brett Lauf has a team-high 79 assists against 49 turnovers while
N'Keeley Elmore has dished out 56 helpers while committing just 22 miscues.
Anderson on a Roll: Since moving back into a starting role seven games again against Siena Heights on Jan. 5,
Little Anderson has averaged 18.7 points per game while scoring at least 13 points in each contest. Anderson is shooting 50% from the floor during the stretch, including 41% from beyond the three-point arc.
White Solid All-Around: McRay White has had a solid season both offensively and defensively this year. The fifth-year senior is averaging 13.4 points per game while shooting a blistering 65.6% from the floor. He is also second on the team in rebounding, grabbing 7.7 boards per night and has recorded a team-high 27 blocked shots in 21 games.
Three Mainstays: McRay White,
Joey Holifield, and
Nick Welch have started all 21 games for the Gray Wolves this season. The trio are all shooting better than 54% from the floor and averaging at least 13.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game each.
Rewrite the Record Books: Lourdes set a new school record earlier this season with 116 points against East-West in the season opener on Oct. 26 but re-broke the mark on Dec. 20 with 117 points at Penn State-Shenango. In fact, the top three scoring games in program history have all happened this season as the Gray Wolves also tallied 115 points at Wilberforce on Nov. 13. The previous record prior to this season was 114 points against Wright State-Lake in 2019.
This and That: Lourdes ranks sixth in NAIA shooting 50.7% from the field ... the Gray Wolves are 14th nationally averaging 85.7 points per game ...
