Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: The 2021-2022 women's basketball season comes to a close this week as Lourdes takes the road for the final two games of the season. The Gray Wolves head across the border on Wednesday evening to battle Siena Heights before wrapping up the campaign with a Saturday matinee at Cornerstone.
Head Coach Tandy Bradford: In her first season on the Lourdes bench,
Tandy Bradford sports an 10-18 (.357) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In her fourth season overall as a collegiate head coach, Bradford has a 31-77 (.287) career mark. She is the fifth head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Siena Heights is 21-0 all-time against Lourdes in a series that began Dec. 3, 2011. The Saints won the first meeting between the two schools, 54-41, on Jan. 17 inside the Ebeid Rec Center. Siena Heights is 10-0 against the Gray Wolves in Adrian, Mich. Cornerstone holds a 15-5 series advantage over Lourdes dating back to Dec. 10, 2011. The Golden Eagles have won the last two meetings between the two schools after a 72-64 win in the Ebeid Rec Center on Dec. 11. Cornerstone is 8-2 against the Gray Wolves in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves began the week on Monday (Feb. 7) falling 63-48 to 17th-ranked Indiana Tech.
Alex Wolfe came off the bench to score 11 points as the only Lourdes player to tally double figures. On Wednesday (Feb. 9), the Gray Wolves dropped a 65-53 decision on the road at Concordia (Mich.).
Mercedes Wagner paced Lourdes with 12 points. In Saturday's (Feb. 12) final home game of the season, the Gray Wolves suffered a 65-60 setback against Michigan-Dearborn. Wagner had 16 points and 15 rebounds while
Logan Ingram added 13 points and
Shallyn Miley chipped in 10 for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints enter the final week following a 76-67 victory at Aquinas on Saturday (Feb. 12). Peyton Banks lead Siena Heights averaging 18.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Sha'kyia Parker has added 15.8 points per night. The Saints are allowing just 55.5 points per game this season while outrebounding teams by 7.3 boards per night.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles dropped a 64-47 decision at home against Lawrence Tech on Monday (Feb. 14) and host Madonna on Wednesday before closing the season with Lourdes. Mackenzie Stein paces the Cornerstone offense averaging 14.1 points per game. Olivia Kubik adds 10.3 points per outing. Emma Costien is the team's rebounding leader, grabbing 4.6 boards per night.
A Quick Double Up: Mercedes Wagner registered her team-leading fifth double-double of the season on Saturday against Michigan-Dearborn. The sophomore finished the game with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Wagner had secured her double-double by halftime, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 boards in the game's first 20 minutes.
Double Threats: Shae Pedroza and
Logan Ingram have led the Gray Wolves in assists this season while also doing their share of scoring. Pedroza leads Lourdes with 59 helpers and is second on the team averaging 10.8 points per game. Ingram has handed out 56 helpers while scoring 9.7 points per night.
Guarding the Perimeter: Lourdes has limited its opponents to just 29.3% shooting from three-point range this season. Of the Gray Wolves' 28 opponents this year, 16 have been held under 30% shooting from long range for the game. Only twice this season has Lourdes allowed a team to make 10 or more three-pointers in a game.
Solid Rookie Seasons: Shallyn Miley and
Alex Wolfe have both had strong freshman campaigns for the Gray Wolves. Miley has started 23 games, averaging 7.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest for Lourdes in her rookie season. Wolfe has come off the bench in 23 games, tallying 6.7 points while adding 11 blocked shots, second most on the roster.
Looking to Equal the School Mark: With Lourdes next victory, the Gray Wolves will match the school record for wins in a season. The current record of 11 victories came in both the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons.
A Historic Victory: Lourdes snapped a 50-game losing skid against NAIA top-25 opponents on New Year's Day with its victory at 24th-ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene. The win was just the second all-time against ranked foes, improving to 2-51 all-time. Lourdes only other victory against a ranked team came on Nov. 5, 2011 at 18th-ranked Indiana-Northwest.
Record-Setting Effort: Lourdes shattered its school record by scoring 132 points in the victory over Miami-Middletown on Nov. 6. The previous mark was 107 points scored at Northwestern Ohio on Feb. 14, 2018. The 58-point margin of victory, 132-74, also broke the previous mark of 54 set on Nov. 6, 2018 against Wright State-Lake, 101-47, and matched last season at Akron Wayne in an 81-27 victory.
This and That: Mercedes Wagner is the lone Gray Wolf to appear in all 28 games ... 10 different Lourdes players have started at least one game this year ... not one player has started every contest ...
Shae Pedroza is shooting 88.9% (40-of-45) from the free throw line ... Lourdes is outscoring teams by 58 points in the fourth quarter this year.
