Lourdes Begins Season's Final Month in WHAC Contention

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes enters the final three weeks of the regular season battling at the top of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.  The Gray Wolves host Concordia (Mich.) on Wednesday this week before heading to Rochester (Mich.) on Saturday for a showdown with the Warriors.

Head Coach Dennis Hopson: In his fourth season on the Lourdes bench, Dennis Hopson is 69-31 (.690) with the Gray Wolves and as a men's collegiate head coach.  He is only the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Lourdes leads the all-time series against Concordia (Mich.) 10-10 dating back to Nov. 2, 2010.  The Cardinals snapped the Gray Wolves' seven game winning streak in the series earlier this year with a 60-41 win in Ann Arbor, Mich.  Lourdes holds a 5-1 series advantage in games played in the Ebeid Rec Center.  Rochester (Mich.) is 8-5 all-time against the Gray Wolves in a series that began Jan. 22, 2011.  Lourdes has won four straight meetings between the two schools after defeating the Warriors at home 69-66 on Jan. 7.  Rochester holds a 4-2 series edge in games played in Rochester Hills, Mich.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes won its third consecutive road game last Wednesday (Jan. 25) with a 72-62 victory at Aquinas.  Joey Holifield scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Jackie Harris added 18 points and eight boards.  Clif Snow tallied 15 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds while Little Anderson scored 14 points.

Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals have won two of their last three games after defeating Concordia (Ill.) 66-58 in the consolation game of the Concordia Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 28).  Kip French leads Concordia in scoring, averaging 11.9 points, while adding 4.2 assists per game this season.  Matt Lockhart has added 10.5 points and a team-leading 6.6 rebounds per contest.  

Scouting Rochester (Mich.): The Warriors have won two straight games after defeating Cornerstone 82-76 on Saturday (Jan. 28) afternoon.  Rochester hosts Rio Grande on Tuesday before hosting the Gray Wolves.  James Ballard leads the Warriors in scoring and rebounding, tallying 13.6 points and 7.7 boards per contest.  Anthony Cukaj adds 12.9 points per outing while Brandon Michrina has tallied 11.0 points per night.  Gunner Walters gives Rochester four double figure scorers, pouring in 10.3 points per game.

A Bunched Standings: With six regular season games to play, Lourdes is in third place in the WHAC standings, just one-half game behind second place Rochester (Mich.) and one-half game ahead of fourth place Madonna. 

Racing Out to First Half Leads: Lourdes is outscoring its opponents on average 39-32 over the first half this season.  When leading or tied at halftime, the Gray Wolves are 13-3 in 2022-2023.

Spreading Out the Scoring: Lourdes had four players finish in double figures last Wednesday in the victory over Aquinas.  It marked the 13th times this season the Gray Wolves have had four or more players finish the game with 10 or more points.  

Making Shots: Lourdes shot 55.1% from the floor in the win over Aquinas, its second best shooting night of the season.  The Gray Wolves connected at a 59.7% clip against East-West on Nov. 27.  For the season Lourdes is shooting 46.7% from the floor as a team.  The Gray Wolves are a perfect 12-0 on the year when shooting a better percentage from the field than the opposition.

From Downtown: Jackie Harris leads the WHAC with 65 three-point field goals this season, averaging 3.0 per game.  He has 105 total triples over his two years with the Gray Wolves, shooting at a 39.6% career clip from beyond the arc.

Among the League Leaders: Jackie Harris and Joey Holifield have both ranked among the top-five in the WHAC in scoring for most of this season.  Harris is fourth in the league at 16.6 points per game while Holifield ranks fifth in the conference at 16.4 points per night.  

A Pair of 1,000-Point Scorers: Earlier this season, Little Anderson became just the third player in program history to reach 1,000 points for his career at Lourdes.  The senior enters play this week with 1,130 career points, third most in program history.  Clif Snow was the second Gray Wolf in program history to reach the milestone, doing so during the 2020-2021 campaign and enters this weekend with a school-record 1,700 career points.

Snow Sets Rebounding Record: Clif Snow became Lourdes University's all-time leading rebounder with five boards against Rochester (Mich.) on Jan. 7.  Earlier this year he became just the second Gray Wolf in program history to reach the 800-board plateau and broke the program record of 825 boards set by Zach Steinmetz (2013-2016).  Snow enters the week with 866 rebounds in his five seasons with the Gray Wolves.

Lourdes Tabbed Third in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in third place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  Lourdes was picked just ahead of Cornerstone and just behind Madonna in the league balloting.  Indiana Tech is the favorite to win the WHAC in 2022-2023.

This and That: Joey Holifield, Jackie Harris, and Little Anderson have started all 22 games this season ... Holifield leads Lourdes in assists (56) and steals (33) as well as minutes played (32.0) ... Lourdes is +3.4 in turnover margin this season, averaging just 11.8 miscues per game.
