Gray Wolves Ready to Host Rochester in WHAC Quarters

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Postseason play has arrived for Lourdes University as the Gray Wolves enter the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament as the third seed.  The Gray Wolves will host sixth-seeded Rochester (Mich.) on Thursday night in the tournament quarterfinals.

Head Coach Dennis Hopson: In his fifth season on the Lourdes bench, Dennis Hopson is 96-39 (.711) with the Gray Wolves and as a men's collegiate head coach.  He is only the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Rochester (Mich.) and Lourdes have split their previous 16 meetings 8-8 dating back to Jan. 22, 2011.  They Gray Wolves have won seven straight meetings against the Warriors after sweeping this season's series.  Lourdes defeated Rochester 82-59 in Rochester Hills, Mich. on Jan. 13 before downing the Warriors 87-70 last Wednesday (Feb. 21) inside the Ebeid Rec Center.  Lourdes leads the series 4-3 inside the Ebeid Rec Center and won the only previous WHAC tournament game against Rochester, a 79-59 triumph at home in the quarterfinals of the 2022 event.

This Season's Previous Meetings: Shaunn Monroe exploded for 30 points on Jan. 13 as Lourdes defeated Rochester (Mich.) 82-59 in Rochester Hills, Mich.   Stephen Coleman Jr. had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Gray Wolves while Nic Borojevich and Joey Holifield added 11 and 10 points respectively.  Anthony Cukaj and Brett White each scored 11 points for the Warriors.  On Feb. 21, Lourdes led by just three at halftime but pulled away in the second half for an 87-70 win in the Ebeid Rec Center.  Holifield led Lourdes with 20 points while Monroe added 18 more.  Jackie Harris scored 15 points and Coleman chipped in 13.  Gunner Walters led Rochester with 19 points while Brody Parker tallied 18 off the bench and White scored 12 more.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Last Wednesday, snapped a four-game losing streak with an 87-70 win at home against Rochester (Mich.).  Joey Holifield led Lourdes with 20 points while Shaunn Monroe added 18 more.  On Saturday, the Gray Wolves closed the regular season with a 78-62 victory at Cleary.  Holifield tallied a game-high 18 points while Stephen Coleman Jr. added 16 more.  Four Gray Wolves scored in double figures in each game last week.

Scouting Rochester (Mich.): The Warriors enter the WHAC tournament having dropped back-to-back games after falling 100-74 at home against Cornerstone last Saturday in the regular season finale.  Gunner Walters leads four players averaging in double figures with 13.1 points per night.  Brett White adds 12.7 points per game while Brody Parker also chips in 11.8 points per night.  James Fisher is scoring 11.3 points per game and grabbing a team-high 7.4 rebounds per contest.  

Lourdes in the WHAC Tournament: Lourdes enters the WHAC tournament with a 7-8 record all-time.  The Gray Wolves are making their 10th overall appearance in the postseason event.  Last year as the second-seed, Lourdes defeated Concordia (Mich.) 107-66 in the quarterfinals before falling 88-78 to Madonna in the semifinal round, playing both games at home.  Lourdes is 3-2 all-time in tournament games at home, including a 2-2 mark inside the Ebeid Rec Center.

Reaching 20 Wins Again: The Gray Wolves have reached the 20-win plateau for the third consecutive season and fourth time in the last five years.  Lourdes has now recorded five 20-win seasons in program history.  The 21 wins the team currently has is fourth most wins ever by a Lourdes squad.  The school record of 24 victories was set in 2021-2022 when the Gray Wolves finished the season 24-8.

Among the League's Scoring Leaders: Lourdes enters the WHAC tournament with three of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference's top-11 scorers.  Jackie Harris ranks fourth averaging a team-leading 18.0 points per game while Shaunn Monroe is eighth in the conference at 17.3 points per night.  Joey Holifield is 11th in the league scoring 17.2 points per contest.

Holifield Moves Into Second on All-Time Scoring List: Joey Holifield has moved past Zach Steinmetz (2013-2016) into second place on the Gray Wolves' all-time scoring list and enters the tournament with 1,479 career points.  He trails just Clif Snow (2017-21, 22-23), who scored 1,789 points at Lourdes, on the all-time list.  Jackie Harris became the fifth member of the 1,000-point club earlier this season, entering this week with 1,194 career points, trailing Little Anderson's (2019-23) 1,286 points for fourth all-time.

Handing Out Helpers: Lourdes has three players ranked in the top-13 in the conference for assist-to-turnover ratio.  Nic Borojevich is eighth with a 2.3 mark, handing out 16 helpers while committing just seven miscues.  Jakiel Wells ranks 10th with 73 assists and just 34 turnovers while Shaunn Monroe is 13th with a team-high 95 assists and just 46 turnovers.  Both Wells and Monroe have a 2.1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

From Downtown: Jackie Harris is tied for second in the WHAC with 76 three-point field goals this season.  He has made 39.0% of his attempts from beyond the arc this year.

Halftime Leads Key: Lourdes 18-0 this season when heading into the locker room at halftime with the lead, and 20-0 if the Gray Wolves lead or are tied.  Lourdes has outscored opponents 1005-852 during the opening 20 minutes this season.

This and That: Jackie Harris ranks third in the WHAC grabbing 7.5 rebounds per night ... Joey Holifield is second in the conference shooting 87.9% from the free throw line ... Shaunn Monroe leads the league with 62 steals.
