Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: After a quarterfinal victory at home, Lourdes takes to the road on Saturday afternoon as the third-seeded Gray Wolves visit second-seeded Cornerstone in the semifinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.
Head Coach Dennis Hopson: In his fifth season on the Lourdes bench,
Dennis Hopson is 97-39 (.713) with the Gray Wolves and as a men's collegiate head coach. Â He is only the third head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Cornerstone holds a 23-5 all-time series advantage against Lourdes dating back to Dec. 10, 2011. Â The two schools split their regular season meetings this year, with each winning on the other's home court. Â The Gray Wolves posted an 84-81 triumph in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Nov. 29 before the Golden Eagles won 89-75 inside the Ebeid Rec Center on Feb. 7. Â Cornerstone holds a 12-3 series edge inside Mol Arena, but the Gray Wolves have won in their last two trips to Grand Rapids.
This Season's Previous Meetings: Lourdes led by as many as 12 in the second half, only to see Cornerstone rally to tie late on Nov. 29, but the Gray Wolves prevailed 84-81 in the first meeting in Grand Rapids, Mich. Â
Jackie Harris led Lourdes with 21 points while
Joey Holifield scored 16 more as Lourdes had four players tally double figures. Â Luke Rowlinson led Cornerstone with 22 points while Eli Steffen added 18 more. Â On Feb. 7 inside the Ebeid Rec Center, Cornerstone jumped out to a 21-point halftime lead on the way to an 89-75 victory over the Gray Wolves. Â
Shaunn Monroe paced Lourdes with 22 points while Holifield added 19. Â Mason Brooks came off the bench to score 19 points for the Golden Eagles while Rowlinson chipped in 18 more.
Wrapping Up Quarterfinal Action: Lourdes used a late first half run to build an 11-point halftime lead and pulled away from Rochester (Mich.) in the second half on the way to an 84-64 victory on Thursday night. Â
Shaunn Monroe made 11-of-15 shots from the floor and scored a game-high 25 points while
Jackie Harris drained six three-pointers and scored 22 points. Â Joey Holifeld tallied a double-double with 16 points while grabbing 11 rebounds. Â James Fisher led Rochester with 13 points.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles have won 12 consecutive games after defeating Aquinas 97-72 on Thursday night in the quarterfinals. Â Cory Ainsworth leads Cornerstone averaging 19.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season. Â Luke Rowlinson adds 17.2 points per outing while Mason Brooks is scoring 9.7 points per night. Â Cornerstone is averaging 87.5 points per game and have scored 89 or more points in 10 of their last 12 games.Â
Lourdes in the WHAC Tournament: Lourdes enters the WHAC semifinals with an 8-8 record all-time in the tournament. Â The Gray Wolves are making their 10th overall appearance in the postseason event. Â Last year as the second-seed, Lourdes defeated Concordia (Mich.) 107-66 in the quarterfinals before falling 88-78 to Madonna in the semifinal round, playing both games at home. Â
Award Winners: Shaunn Monroe was named the WHAC Newcomer of the Year after averaging 17.6 points and 3.7 assists per night this season. Â Monroe joined
Jackie Harris and
Joey Holifield as First Team All-WHAC selections as well. Â Harris is averaging 18.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while Holifield tallies 17.1 points and 6.1 boards per night.
Reaching 20 Wins Again: The Gray Wolves have reached the 20-win plateau for the third consecutive season and fourth time in the last five years. Â Lourdes has now recorded five 20-win seasons in program history. Â The 22 wins the team currently has is tied for the second most wins ever by a Lourdes squad. Â The school record of 24 victories was set in 2021-2022 when the Gray Wolves finished the season 24-8.
Holifield Moves Into Second on All-Time Scoring List: Joey Holifield has moved past Zach Steinmetz (2013-2016) into second place on the Gray Wolves' all-time scoring list and enters the semifinals with 1,495 career points. Â He trails just
Clif Snow (2017-21, 22-23), who scored 1,789 points at Lourdes, on the all-time list. Â
Jackie Harris became the fifth member of the 1,000-point club earlier this season, entering this week with 1,216 career points, trailing
Little Anderson's (2019-23) who had 1,286 points for fourth all-time.
Tops from the Charity Stripe: Joey Holifield leads the WHAC in free throw shooting this season, connecting at an 88.3% clip. Â Holifield has been to the line 145 times, making 128 of his attempts.
Among the League Leaders: Jackie Harris ranks in the top three in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference in both scoring and rebounding this season. His 18.2 points per game are third most while his 7.5 boards per contest are second best in the league. Â
From Downtown: Jackie Harris leads the WHAC with 82 three-point field goals this season. Â He has made 39.6% of his attempts from beyond the arc this year.
Halftime Leads Key: Lourdes 19-0 this season when heading into the locker room at halftime with the lead, and 21-0 if the Gray Wolves lead or are tied. Â Lourdes has outscored opponents 1044-880 during the opening 20 minutes this season.
