The Lourdes University baseball team hosted their first ever baseball game at home at the new Mercy field on March 18, 2012 against Rochester College Warriors. The Gray Wolves would fight hard but came up short against the Warriors 3-1. Gray Wolves had strong pitching behind starter Frank Shaffer who would go all seven innings relinquishing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out one and only walking two runners in the ballgame.
Lourdes would jump out first in the top of the first inning scoring one run on three hits but unfortunately strand two runners that would come back to bite the Gray Wolves later on. The Gray Wolves missed their chances to score leaving seven players left on base.
Tyler Trame led the Gray Wolves in hitting on the day going two for three at the plate. Lourdes would have their chances in the game stranding seven runners overall including after a late rally that would fall short in the bottom of the 7
th inning.
Andrew Jarrell picked up the victory on the mound for the Warriors while relief pitcher Ron Carter would record the save.
With the loss the Gray Wolves fell to 5-14 overall.
Game two was a defensive battle early on for the Gray Wolves and Warriors. Each team would get a couple of hits early on but no one would get a base runner home until the top of the 3
rd inning when the Warriors would plate two. After the Warriors tacked two more runs on the board in the top of the 5
th inning Lourdes would respond with a pair of their own with Garrett Jex and Phillip Dysard each coming around to score. Gray Wolves came up empty in the bottom of the 6
th inning after getting the leadoff batter on first base.
Lourdes would get out of a jam after the Warriors advanced a runner to 2
nd base. The Gray Wolves hold the Warriors from scoring in the 7
th inning. The Gray Wolves are now down two in the bottom of the 7
th inning. Phillip Dysard would start off the 7
th inning with a single to left field. The Warriors would bring in save specialist Ron Carter to try and earn his second save of the day after securing the first game victory for Rochester. Garret Jex would bounce into a tailor made 4-6-3 double play. Lourdes again loses their chances to score leaving seven players on base. Jake Conklin and Andy Kefalos both went two for three at the plate.
The Gray Wolves would fall again to Rochester College 4-2.
After the loss the Gray Wolves fall to 5-15 overall. Next up for the Gray Wolves will be Defiance College at 4 p.m. on March 21
st. Their next home game will be a double header on March 24 against Davenport University starting at 1 p.m.
