The Lourdes University Gray Wolves baseball team kicked off their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season against the Panthers of Davenport University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
It was a pitchers duel early on until the 3
rd inning when the Panthers played small ball to amass three runs against the Gray Wolves. The Gray Wolves continued to play hard on the defensive side for the next two innings. In the fifth inning, Jake Conklin would score the first run for the Gray Wolves after being hit in by third baseman Tyler Trame. Davenport would go on a run again in the seventh inning though scoring three more runs allowing them to lead 6-1.
The starting pitcher for the Gray Wolves, Frank Shaffer, pitched just over six innings of the game giving up nine hits and six runs. Kyle Vandecaveye would relieve Shaffer for the remaining innings only giving up one run.
The Gray Wolves would fall to Davenport University 6-1 in the first game.
The second game of the double header would belong to the Panthers Drew Sain. Drew would throw a complete 7 inning shutout no hitter against the Gray Wolves. Lourdes would swing hard but come up short in the effort losing the game 5-0.
Drew Sain pitched 7 innings allowing only 1 walk in the game and stuck out 6.
Drew Lepiarz pitched effectively for the Gray Wolves going 6 innings giving up 7 hits and 4 earned runs with 2 walks and 1 strike out.
The Gray Wolves are now 5-18; 0-2 WHAC. Their next home game will be a double header on Sunday March 25 at 1pm against Davenport University.
