Gray Wolves Capture 1st Victory In WHAC

Tyler Trame hits for the Gray Wolves
The Lourdes University Gray Wolves baseball team sure made their first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory an interesting one on Wednesday afternoon as they hosted the Racers of UNOH in doubleheader action at Mercy Field.

The Gray Wolves would forget to basically show up in the first game as they were out hit, out pitched and out played all around the scheduled nine inning affair. Lourdes fell behind 4-0 after the first inning and then 9-0 after the second inning of the game. Mentally it seemed to be over right there for Lourdes as they would get the 10 run mercy rule kicking in after the seventh inning. Lourdes lost the game 21-1. It was the worst loss of the season and in the short time of playing in Lourdes history.

An in between game team meeting by Coach Andy Ham seemed to have fallen on deaf ears at least early on in game two. The Gray Wolves played the role of visitor in the game and managed to jump on the board in the top of the first inning to lead 1-0. The lead would not last long though as the Racers quickly snagged the lead back 2-1 after the inning. Lourdes trailed 8-2 after three innings of play and it was starting to look like a replay of game 1 until Lourdes would come to bat in the top of the fifth inning.

Lourdes' bats came alive in the top of the fifth inning. The Gray Wolves not only batted through the entire order but they would manage to take the lead 10-8 at the end of the inning. The lead lasted till the very tense end as Lourdes held on for the victory 10-9.

Lourdes earned their first WHAC victory and moved to 6-21 overall and 1-5 in the WHAC.

Patrick Magat led the way for the Gray Wolves in the victory hitting 3 of 4 with 2 rbi and a 1 run scored.
Frank Shaffer received the win moving his record to 2-3 overall. Drew Lepiarz earned his first save of the season.

“It feels tremendous getting this win for the team and the program as a whole. We had everyone contribute in this win. UNOH is a great team and for us to come back and win after being down shows how much character this team has. This was a big win and step for our program” said Head Coach Andy Ham after the victory when asked what it meant to get the win today.

Next up for the Gray Wolves is at Madonna University on Saturday March 31st and April 1st. Both days are doubleheaders starting at 1pm.
