The Lourdes University baseball team got their first win of the season and of the program on Sunday morning defeating St. Xavier University by a final score of 10-6.
The Gray Wolves started out slow against the Cougars falling behind 4-0 after the top half of the first inning of play before the rally started in the bottom of the second inning with Phillip Dysard getting a double to center field that would bring around Tyler Trame. Austin Gunn hit a line drive in the second inning to cut the lead to one run scoring Phillip Dysard making it a 4-3 disadvantage.
The Gray Wolves would eventually pull away in game plating four runs in the bottom of the 5
th inning after RBI by Brandon D'Agnese, Phillip Dysard and Andy Kefalos to give the Lourdes squad a 10-6 advantage and win.
The Gray Wolves would get their first victory overall and move to 1-4 overall. Frank Schaffer was credited with the victory on the mound.
Game 2 on the day would be more difficult as the Gray Wolves would not have as much time in between games as initially planned. The Gray Wolves were scheduled to take the field at 3pm following Point Park vs. St. Xavier University but unfortunately the Cougars would forfeit the game.
The Gray Wolves quick turnaround ended up hurting the young bunch early on as they surrendered 3 runs in the bottom half of the first inning to fall behind 3-0. Phillip Dysard picked up where he left off in game 1 by getting a two run double in the top of the 2
nd inning cutting the disadvantage down to 3-2.
Following a solo homerun for Point Park in the bottom half of the third inning Lourdes responded with three runs of their own in the top of the 4
th with RBI by Garrett Jex and Brandon D'Agnese to give the Gray Wolves a 5-4 lead.
The Pioneers eventually got the momentum in the 5
th inning scoring 3 runs and then 6 more in the bottom half of the 8
th inning to close out the game with a 16-6 victory.
With the loss Lourdes falls to 1-5 overall and will look to rebound on Monday at 1pm against Evangel College out of Missouri.
