The Lourdes Gray Wolves fell 3-2 in the 10 innings today against Bluefield College in Auburndale, FL. Lourdes starter Frank Shaffer pithed very well for the Gray Wolves going 8 1/3 innings giving up two runs (one earned) 3 hits and struck out 3. Bluefield scored a run in the 1
st before Shaffer was able to induce a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. Shaffer would cruise until the 9
th as he kept the Bluefield hitter off balance all game. Bluefield would make it 2-0 after two Lourdes errors. This would set up a dramatic come back for the Lourdes offense in the top of the 9
th inning. Patrick Magat led off the inning with a double to left-center field. Jake Conklin followed with a single to put runners at 1
st and 3
rd and no outs. Pinch hitter Nick Mazgay plated Magat with a RBI ground out to short. Brad Gennari scored Conklin with a single to right to tie the game at two. In the bottom of the 9
th Bluefield put runners at the corners with one out, causing Lourdes to go to their bullpen and bring in right-hander Adam Little. Little was able to get pinch hitter Joey Andrew to hit a ground ball to second basemen Conklin who turner a tremendous double to end the threat and send the game to extra innings. In the top of the 10
th Lourdes loaded the bases with one out after singles by Andy Kefalos and Magat and a one out walk to Conklin. Brandon D'Agnese stepped to the plate and hit the ball on a line but unfortunately Bluefield short stop was able to leap and catch the ball and flip it to second for a double to end the inning. Bluefield was able to get the lead runner on in the 10
th after Little hit the lead-off batter Zac Russel-Myers. He then stole second and was bunted over to third. The game would end after Trevor Martin single passed the drawn in infield giving the Ram the 3-2 victory. The loss drops the Gray Wolves to 1-10 overall and 1-6 on their trip. They will be back on the field on Friday as they take on Calumet St. Joseph in a double-header starting at 11am in Lakeland, FL.
The Gray Wolves lost two games in their double-header with Hannibal La-Grange University Tuesday afternoon in Winter Haven, FL. Lourdes fell 8-0 and 7-4. They now fall to 1-5 on their spring trip and 1-9 overall on the season.
In game one the Trojans would jump out to an early lead as they scored 3 runs on two hits and a walk. The big hit in the inning was a triple by second basemen Clint Hamilton. Gray Wolves starter Kyle Vandecaveye would settle down and pitch scoreless 3
rd, 4
th and 5
th innings. Vandecaveye would find himself in trouble again in the 6
th after an error and a single Trojan catcher Ian Sikes would put the game away with a 3 run homerun over the left field fence. Lourdes reliever Chris Cody came in the game to get out of the inning and pitched a perfect 7
th inning for the Gray Wolves. Lourdes would only scratch out 4 hits. Phil Dysard had a pair of singles and a stolen base to lead the offense.
The first inning would once again go badly for Lourdes as starter Jim Dunnett surrendered a grand-slam to be the Gray Wolves in an early hole. Lourdes would battle and scratch across a single run in the 1
st as Dysard scored on an RBI single by Andy Kefalos. Dunnett settled in to keep the game close putting up scoreless innings in the 2
nd, 3
rd and 4
th innings. Lourdes cut the lead in half at 4-2 in the 4
th when Lourdes catcher Patrick Magat scored on a Nick Mazgay sacrifice fly out to left field. Hannibal La-Grange added 3 more runs in the 5
th after two walks and two costly errors. The Gray Wolves would not go down without a fight as they plated two run in the top of the 7
th for the final score of 7-4. Magat had a two run single in the 7
th and Dysard added a double and a run scored to pace the Lourdes offense.
