Lourdes came up on the short end of a pair of one-run baseball games to Asbury on Friday afternoon at Asbury at Cecil Zweifel Field in Wilmore, Ky. The Gray Wolves dropped the opening game 7-6 to the Eagles before falling 5-4 in the nightcap in a game shortened to six innings due to darkness.
Lourdes jumped on top early in the opener, plating a run in the opening inning.
Tim DeCant (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) doubled down the leftfield line with two outs and scored one batter later as
Josh Redies followed with a two-bagger to the gap in left-center.
The Gray Wolves added to the lead in the third as
John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) hit his first home run as at Lourdes, a solo shot that made it 2-0.
Asbury cut the Lourdes lead in half in the bottom of the third on a triple and a sacrifice fly before the Gray Wolves took advantage of an Eagle error in the fourth. Redies reached on a miscue to lead off the inning and took second on a wild pitch.
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) doubled to centerfield to up the Lourdes lead to 3-1 midway through the contest.
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with four runs. A two-run single by Matt Cox tied the game and a hit by Simeon Bell put the hosts on top. A two-out error allowed Asbury to build a 5-3 lead.
In the Lourdes sixth
Mike Calloway (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech H.S.) doubled home
Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.), who was running for
Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.), after he reached with a leadoff walk.
Asbury added two more runs in the sixth, one of which was unearned, to take a 7-4 lead into the seventh. Lourdes looked to rally as Redies added two more runs batted in on the afternoon with a single to left, scoring Crooks and
Austin Gunn (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.). The Gray Wolves had the tying run on third with one out, but a game-ending double play ended the threat.
Anthony Palmer earned the victory (2-2) for Asbury, allowing five hits and three runs, two of which were earned.
Kyle Vandecaveye (Ida, Mich./Ida H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), giving up five runs, four of which were earned, and eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.
In the nightcap, Asbury took the lead early with single runs in both the first and second innings. An unearned run in the first followed by a RBI fielder's choice put the Eagles in front 2-0. The hosts expanded the lead in the fifth with two more runs, both coming without the ball being hit out of the infield. A couple of bunts and an infield lead put Asbury on top 4-0.
Lourdes battled back to tie the game in the top of the sixth. DeCant doubled and
Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) drove him home with a triple to right. After Calloway walked and stole second,
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) reached on an error, scoring DeCant. A balk scored Calloway to pull the Gray Wolves within a run and Jex scored on the second error of the inning by the Eagles.
Asbury won the game in the bottom of the sixth though on a walk and a sacrifice bunt. Matt Cox then hit a ball to right that dropped, scoring Casey Messner from second despite Cox being thrown out at first.
Fitzgerald and DeCant each had two hits in the contest for Lourdes, as the Gray Wolves managed just six total for the game.
Micah Pace earned the win (1-2) in relief for Asbury while
Nathan Hammer (Fostoria, Ohio/Fostoria H.S.) suffered the loss out of the bullpen in his collegiate debut.
Lourdes (1-3) and Asbury (3-14) will play another doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Cecil Zweifel Field. First pitch of the opener is set for noon.
