Lourdes Sweeps Goshen in Home Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Lourdes opened the 2013 home schedule on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field by sweeping a doubleheader from Goshen 3-1 and 5-4 on a cold, blustery afternoon.  The games were make-up contests from Wednesday afternoon's postponement.

“I am really pleased at where we are at right now,” head coach Andy Ham said after the wins.  “We have confidence right now and expect to be in games which will make us successful.”

Goshen jumped on top with an unearned run in the opening inning of game one and that would be their only offense of the contest.  Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) worked six strong innings for the win (3-1), striking out seven and walking just one while allowing the one unearned run.

“Drew pitched very well in game one for us,” Ham added.

Lourdes tied the game in the bottom of the first when Phill Dysard (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) led off with a walk and scored one batter later on a triple to the right-centerfield gap by John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.).

The Gray Wolves took the lead in the second as Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) doubled with one out and two batters later scored on Mark Oehlers (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) single to center.  Austin Gunn (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) eventually scored on an error after Dysard, who followed with a base hit, stole second and the throw got away from the second baseman.

“We played good defense but also found ways to get runs in today,” Ham stated.  “If we continue to do that we are going to win some games.”

Neither team would score the rest of the way.  Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) came on in the seventh to earn his seventh save of the season.

Crooks had the only two-hit game in the opener for the Gray Wolves as Lourdes tallied seven hits on the day.  Jessse Quintanilla went 3-for-3 for the Maple Leafs to pace their 10-hit attack.  Goshen left 12 runners on base in game one.

Spencer Oversen suffered the loss (1-1) for Goshen, striking out six and walking two in a complete game effort.

Goshen (1-10) again struck first in game two, scoring three runs in the opening inning, taking advantage of two walks and two hit batters.  Brandon Wright then delivered the lone hit of the inning, a two-run bases loaded single to make it 3-0.

The Gray Wolves answered in the bottom of the first with four runs of their own.  Crooks was hit by a pitch and Tim DeCant (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) followed with a single.  Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) delivered the first run of the game with a single to left-center before Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) drew a walk to load the bases.  Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) brought Lourdes within 3-2 after drawing a bases loaded free pass and Sam Jerome (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) gave the Gray Wolves the lead with a two-run single.

Lourdes added to the lead in the second as Crooks doubled home Gunn, who led off the inning with a walk, giving the Gray Wolves a 5-3 lead.

Lee Lovejoy (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.), who came on in relief in the opening inning, gave up just one run and three hits out of the bullpen in 4.2 innings of work to earn the win (2-2). The lone run came in the fourth following a Lourdes error which made it 5-4.

“Lee did a great job in game two coming out of the pen,” Ham concluded.

Nathan Scanlan (Parkersburg, W.Va./Lake [Ohio] H.S.) pitched a scoreless sixth and Olsavsky came on again in the seventh, pitching a 1-2-3 frame to earn his sixth save of the year.

Lourdes managed just five hits in the afternoon, all against starter Zach Thompson who took the loss (0-1).  Thompson walked three and fanned three in four innings of work.

Corey Johnson had two of the Maple Leafs' three hits in the nightcap.

Lourdes (8-9) has now matched the 2012 team's victory total in just 17 games this season.  The Gray Wolves, winners of three straight, will return to the diamond on Sunday afternoon hosting Rochester.  First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Mercy Field.  Saturday's games have been postponed due to snow in the forecast, and Sunday's contests have been moved from Rochester Hills, Mich. to Mercy Field.
