Indiana Tech Takes Two from Lourdes Thursday Afternoon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Lourdes wrapped up a seven-game homestand on Thursday afternoon dropping both ends of a doubleheader against Indiana Tech, 11-1 and 12-3 at Mercy Field.

“Indiana Tech is a good team,” head coach Andy Ham said after the games.  “There were two or three plays today where if we were able to execute it becomes a different day for us.  We need our bullpen to come on and throw strikes.  That's key and we haven't done that all year.  We're looking for that guy to step up and get us out of innings.”

In the opening game it was four unearned runs in the third inning that gave the Warriors the league and they added another in the fourth inning to open up a 5-0 lead.  Lourdes scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth as Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) singled home Phill Dysard (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.), who led off the inning with a single and moved into scoring position on an Indiana Tech error.

The Warriors added three more runs in the seventh and three more in the ninth though against five different relievers.  Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) started and suffered the loss (1-3), despite allowing just one earned run in 5.1 innings of work.

Dysard and Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) each had two hits apiece for the Gray Wolves, but the team tallied just seven hits total for the game.

“We had guys on at times offensively today, but did not get the big hits we needed with runners in scoring position,” Ham added.

Kyle Nolen earned the win (1-1), allowing one run and six hits in 5.1 innings of work.  Jake Owens went 3-for-5 with four runs batted in while Ignatius Mackenzie also had a three-hit game as the Warriors pounded out 14 on the afternoon.

Game two saw Lourdes jump out on top in the opening inning as John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) homered to right for his third round-tripper of the season.

Indiana Tech (14-6, 4-0 WHAC) answered with three runs in the second, keyed by Brian Hakes two-run single, to take a 3-1 lead.

The Gray Wolves fought back to tie the game in the fourth on a two-run single by Crooks to plate Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) and Sam Jerome (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.).

Again the Warriors answered though, as Jacob Dunnichay tripled to lead off the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly.  Indiana Tech opened the game up with five runs in the sixth, taking advantage of a pair of Gray Wolf errors, and added three more in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Crooks had two of Lourdes' five hits while driving home all three runs.

Lee Lovejoy (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) suffered the loss (2-3), working 5.1 innings.

“Both starters, Frank and Lee, threw well but we didn't make the plays to get them out of innings,” Ham concluded.

Ray Calloway went 3-for-3 with three runs scored to pace Indiana Tech's 12-hit attack in game two.

Lourdes (8-14, 0-5) will travel to Adrian, Mich. on Saturday afternoon to face Siena Heights.  First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
