Lourdes Splits at Siena Heights to Pick Up First League Win

Lourdes opened a four-game Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series at Siena Heights on Saturday afternoon, registering a split of the doubleheader at The SHU Diamond.  The Gray Wolves won the opener 6-2 and pick up their first conference victory of the season before falling in the nightcap 15-2.
 
The win, Lourdes ninth of the season, surpassed last year's win total, setting a school record for victories in a season while the conference triumph also match last year's total over 28 games.
 
The Gray Wolves wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard in the opener as Tim DeCant (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) led off the game with a home run.  The Saints tied the game in the third with a two-out single before Lourdes retook the lead in the fifth.  Josh Readies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) singled home John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) with two outs to put the visitors on top.
 
DeCant increased the lead to 4-1 in the sixth with a two-run single, as the Gray Wolves took advantage of a Siena Heights error allowing one of the runners to reach.  Siena Heights added on run to cut the Lourdes lead to two in the sixth but the Gray Wolves added two more insurance tallies in the ninth.
 
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) singled home one run while the other scored on a groundout off of the bat of Sam Jerome (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.). 
 
Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) earned the win (4-1), allowing two runs on nine hits over seven innings.  He struck out four while walking just two.  Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) pitched the final 1.1 innings to register his seventh save of the year.
 
Jake Sperry suffered the loss (1-2) for the Saints, surrendering four runs on four hits in 5.1 innings on the hill.
 
DeCant led the Lourdes offense with two hits and three runs batted in as the Gray Wolves tallied seven hits in the contest.  Nolan Herendeen had three of Siena Heights 10 hits in the opener.
 
In game two, a two-run single by B.J. Salazar started a three-run second inning for the hosts.  Lourdes answered with two in the fourth to pull within one without the benefit of a hit.  Jex had a RBI ground out and Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) added a sacrifice fly.
 
Siena Heights broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, scoring 12 times before Lourdes could register its first out of the inning.  The Gray Wolves used five pitchers in the inning, yielding nine hits and four walks.
 
Brent Vaccaro earned the win (2-2) on the mound for Siena Heights while Kyle Vandecaveye (Ida, Mich./Ida H.S.) suffered the loss (1-3), allowing five runs and 12 hits over four plus innings of work.
 
Lourdes managed just three hits in the nightcap while the Saints pounded out 19, including four three-hit performances.  Kyle Johnson drove home four RBI for Siena Heights in the win.
 
Lourdes (9-15, 1-6 WHAC) and Siena Heights (5-11, 2-4) will take Easter Sunday off before concluding the four-game series on Monday afternoon with another doubleheader.  First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at the SHU Diamond.
